When I was in nursing school in the 70’s, homosexuality was still in the DSM and that is what we were taught. I really never bought into it. I would disagree about the combination of factors that include environment and social interactions in the development of homosexuals. I happen to have two employees, brothers, whose upbringing was as close to identical as you could get. One is straight, and the other is gay. The structure of the family is sound, with both parents working in good jobs. I cannot see any environmental factors in this particular situation. I would lean more to accepting the biological explanation. I realize that this is just one situation and in no way could explain all. I also have a nephew who is gay. There is certainly nothing in his upbringing that I can attribute this to. Again, I would have to believe that biological factors are more important. When I was in school, we were also taught that the reason for schizophrenia was a combination of factors…the same as the ones you listed above. But as time and research have shown, the genetic, biological and chemical factors seem to be more important than social ones. I believed then, as I do now, that bio-chemical factors are responsible for many “mental illnesses”, including ADD and ADHD in our children as well as bi-polar disorders. Cain was asked in an interview about the state sales taxes that would not go away when the 9% national tax was instated. He said that the question was “muddying the water” and a totally different issue. He completely side-stepped the question and refused to answer. I personally think it was over his head! This man is dumber than a box of rocks! I really don’t think that the state taxes had even occurred to him! At present, in NC we have a state sales tax of 7.25%. Cain has been talking ad nauseum about his scheme to make the poor pay more. He claimed, falsely, that since the poor pay 15.2% in payroll taxes, his 999 plan would mean a tax cut! Well, his numbers are wrong and Lawrence O’Donnell was the first and ONLY commentator to bring this up. I posted a comment about this a few days ago. Employees do pay those payroll taxes…but only at a rate of ONE-HALF of the amount, 7.6% with the employer paying the other half. So, this would mean that the poor would actually be paying MORE in payroll taxes! But, as Lawrence pointed out, these monies would not go into Medicare/Social Security. Mr. Cain wants to ABOLISH any social safety net program! For some strange reason, none of the talking heads have seen fit to bring that inconvenient truth into the light! IMO, Cain is a very silly man! He does not have the depth to attempt to run this country. And as your piece shows, his plans for a flat tax would ruin us…the rest of the way! If the “Occupy Wall Street” movement has done any good at all, it would be to open the eyes of the voters to exactly what is wrong in this country! The President defended the lack of prosecutions for the Wall Street crooks who crashed our economy in his presser last week. What the bankers did was NOT illegal, something that a lot of people don’t understand. How did this come to be? We can lay the blame right at the feet of Congress! We are seeing a bit more coverage on MSM of the New York City protests, and today they are showing some footage of a rather large gathering in Boston. But there are lots of smaller protests all over the country that we don’t hear anything about on the MSM. Of course, the MSM has done its share with derogatory comments about the protesters, showing the most radical people (like the zombies in Zuccotti Park) that give the movement an unfair image IMO. It would certainly be an eye-opener to a lot of the American people to see just exactly WHO is marching… as you say, the chronically unemployed, the very poor, the seniors, and the middle class who have been hurt so badly.
