God save us from the religious Christians. I believe in prayer, but first as a way of thanking God, not asking for things. I recognize the fallability of all religion and those who push it for their own means and ends. But at the end of the day, I believe that if there is a judgement, it will be based on how we have been as human beings to others and to the world, not that only through Jesus we are saved. That said, most people figure either I’m a religious nut, when I chose to play one for effect, or a ragin’ pagan, for the same reasons. But she is still limited by her environment, which includes the time dictates placed on her by the insurance companies and management. She was intelligent, and kind, and reeked of decency. I essentially told her that the fact that she didn’t think about the “big truths” is part of why she was able to maintain her happiness. Several years later in college, she came to me and said, “I didn’t understand it at the time, but I get it now”. Happiness is often about innocence. When we lose that innocence, we have to intellectualize our state into “we feel good” or something similar. Children are happy until the world intrudes on them with cold facts. And some of the “happy” adults I’ve met are in denial about the realities around them. That’s not pessimism, guys, just real. I find happiness in those simple, more innocent things, like flowers, and nature in general, and things that happen out of happenstance, not planning or design. Do I find satisfaction? I’m not sure that we’ll find one. Predators aren’t the answer, we hit as many civilians who then don’t love us as the bad guys we were aiming at. Holding ground is a myth. And being overlords in any country is just not a good way to convince most people that you’re there to help them. What is needed is a middle eastern regional force who aren’t viewed as much as outsiders as we or the Europeans are. And even then, what are they going to do? Once upon a time I got laid off in a Reduction in Force where the company screwed up big time with expensive government contracts and the sacrificial employees got treated like sheep to the slaughter. So I did a satirical newspaper about them and the baffoons there and let go. Then got it to one of the survivors to distribute. Most loved it (including the chief engineer) but some of the people who were at the heart of the guilt certainly weren’t pleased. But being the CEO of America doesn’t mean you’re an expert on everything, and his personal advisors directed him to their favorite advisors, ect., and I feel like he isn’t always getting the best advice, but they sure can sell it to him in the boardroom. For example, the “let’s not look back but forward” thing. Or the refusal to renounce some of the Bush administrations more questionable practices. I realize when you’re at the top it’s hard to give up the keys to the car someone else stole, but you’ve got to to maintain the high ground. But I believe the President can learn and adapt and that he is not going to put us at risk, but try to improve our place here and in the world. I chose to become an Obama supporter early last year because 1) I knew that another Clinton in the White House would mean at least 4 years of Republican sabotage (I didn’t even think it was just going to be an attack the democrat thing) and 2) I knew that with the economic conditions of the country a person who could help lead through effective words was what we were going to need. And honestly, I thought we were past the race thing. This something is better than nothing. But I’m still not sure it was the best we could do in the circumstances, but what was the most expeditious path. I’m being kind to politicians with that one. I’m more and more believing that having corporate reform this year should have been the priority, and insurance companies should have been included in that. Then next year after we had removed some of their teeth, the human aspect of reform could have been more easily accomplished. If there is anything positive to be said about the recession and the healthcare arena, it’s that Americans are again becoming sensitized to the fact that these companies aren’t there to help us, only themselves. But aren’t you one of them there Canadians?
