I have mixed–or at least unclear–feelings about the mortgage deal. Is it better to get some money for homeowners via a settlement, or try to prosecute the banksters. In a settlement, it it not only somewhat helpful, it’s stimulative. But on the other hand, I think it’s not punitive enough. I realize that prosecutions are risky too–absolutely no guarantee a judge would rule against the banks anyway. it would be wonderful from the standpoint of Justice being attempted, but not sure in the end it would help homeowners. We have so much crap here in the US–buy so much stuff–it would be an actual blessing to not be able to afford most of the shit at Walmart. We could all save money and delay gratification the way my grandparents did. Plus, our trade deficit with China would improve. I can’t see the downside. Of course, I do understand that for many people–especially with young families–they might really need the bargains which places like Walmart offer, especially on basics and nutritious food, even pharmaceuticals.
