We may not have the 20% unemployment that the height of the Depression did, but I figure that when I factor in the greater population of today, there are probably just as many people–if not more–suffering. What made it worse though was that there were NO safety nets in place; no food stamps or SS or any kind of welfare, except bread lines and soup kitchens. It’s not even the actually wages or the fact that we are being squeezed even more. It’s about the sheer injustice, the media memes, the feeling that this is so obvious–right in front of our eyes–and that nobody in screaming bloody murder. The 99% are fed up and furious for the reason you said: What really galls me about the tone of this article is that it doesn’t just make the “free market” conclusion that “The pay is too low for the market.” The conclusion is “The workers are lazy.” Free marketers only when it works in their favor, I guess. I may be wrong, but I feel if the media reported these economic stories correctly without their corporate slant, many of us would at least feel that we were being heard, even if our elected officials were as venal or as impotent as they are. But given that a vast number of us feel we have no outlet that is on our side, well, it make me want a revolution. The press has focused somewhat on the Religious Right and creationism and issues like that, and I think the vast majority of people just write that off as fringe and something that doesn’t impact them or their kids–unless they live in the Bible Belt. This is a whole different animal–this is CORPORATE control of education. This is about privatizing it and teaching whatever the corporations think will make better peasants. Oh, I am not sure that the actual brainwashing is the first goal–I think profits are what they have in mind initially. The other day I posted something about how Rupert Murdoch is trying to get into the education business. He said there are “untapped profits” to be made! I see now that the whole push towards demonizing teachers is not merely about unions, or even test scores–I see it now as phase one of planting seeds of distrust in our education system as a whole. And I wouldn’t be surprised if our President knows this, at least to some degree, in his insistence on promoting his education agenda as a way to fight back against this privatization trend. Listening to many of the GOPutz candidates, most of them are for dismantling the entire Department of Education itself! I am so VERY happy to hear what your community did to stop this! I have to believe that as more people become aware of this, they too will fight back.
