To Censor Or Not To Censor

Quote:
“In all the cases that I can recall, the perpetrators were discovered to have a large collection of violent films and/or manga, even to have gotten their ideas from such.”

I believe that this is like the argument that video games cause violence. Unfortunately, that argument has been thoroughly debunked over the last decade.

“We clearly associate media violence to aggressive behavior. But the impact was very small compared to other things. Some may not be happy with that, but that’s where the science is.”

~ Surgeon General David Satcher

For example, this Australian study found that only children already predisposed to violence were affected by violent games.

I think that the same is probably true for those cases that you are talking about. The violent media did not cause them to commit crimes, though it may have given them ideas on how to do so. Their own predispositions are what caused them to commit these crimes.

Thinking that these forms of media are what causes them to commit crimes seems to me to be a manifestation of the Post hoc… fallacy:

1.) A occurs before B.
2.) Therefore A is the cause of B.

Okay, I love “Akira”, but in “Akira” the violence made sense in context and was designed to portray the sheer corruption and depravity of the society. From what I’ve heard of “Urotsukidoji” the, em, “stuff” that takes place in the film makes no sense even in context. It’s just there.

Furthermore, I don’t believe that we should single out anime and manga for more criticism than Film or even books. The medium of manga and anime allows for more exaggerated depictions of violence than Film currently allows. But, by God is film catching up.

For example, I disliked “Kill Bill”. It was simply violence for the hell of it, IMO. “Inglorious Bastards”, while equally or perhaps more violent actually made some interesting points. TBH, I would have preferred if the Brad Pitt and his “Bastards” were left out of the film, especially considering the bad ending – IMO.

There is a major difference between horror movies and gore movies. The latter masquerade as horror movies to justify their ridiculous, pathetic and moronic depravity; much in the same way that anything made by Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg masquerades as a comedy film.

Horror films elicit fear and terror, while gore films elicit disgust and, in the case of its fans, the childish glee of picking your nose and showing it to someone. However, there is a caveat here. Do you remember the controversy and censorship over “Monthy Python’s Life of Brian”? Such action was patent pandering to certain groups and had next to nothing to do with the actual content of the Film.

I think that every Film has to be considered as an individual case and entirely on it’s own merits and the maker’s intentions. Yes, intentions should be considered as they have a significant effect of both the work and how it will be received. This means that censoring one film because you censored another is not a valid reason for censorship. This is how you can separate the “Saving Private Ryan”s from the “Saw”s.

An Argument Against US Intervention in Libya

I wholeheartedly agree.

Lol.

Actually, I do have a godfather with a slightly similar personality to Adonai, though he’s a police detective.

That’s a good point, though oil subsidies aren’t going away any time soon.

Well, yes. There have been hundreds of far worse tyrants than them, but I get your point.

Thanks and yes, I’m 18.

I’m still in secondary school (high school), but that’s because I chose to do the extra transition year course. Otherwise, I’d be in college.

I too have often wondered why they don’t go after the central military figurehead as often as they could.

The Naruto Sakura?

Cardcaptor Sakura was probably my favorite show as an older child.

*Edit.*

I love spring too. After Christmas the whole Winter thing just gets me down.

We Are Aiding and Abetting the Republicans

As I understand it the United Nations Participation Act (1945), which was passed by Congress, allows the US to participate in any actions that the UN decides upon.

Technically, Congress has already agreed to the intervention in Libya.

An Immodest (Immoral) Proposal

But seriously, this is a fantastic idea, in both senses of the word. I absolutely think that you should at least try to make this Atlantis a reality. I’ll support you in whatever way I think that I can.

Too often great, even if improbable, things never enter this world because people give up on them.

Perhaps this could just be a way to kick-start the idea.

The Nuclear Power of Profits

I’ve heard recently that the Polywell method of controlled Nuclear Fusion has overcome many design hurdles.

Apparently, the concept works and the whole idea just needs to be refined for commercial energy purposes.

If this is true, it would be incredibly important. From what I understand, in case of a containment breach the reactor would simply shut down because the containment itself is what is allowing the reaction to occur.

If I’m in charge of the military of the State of that city is a part in a time of war, then I’m responsible for the entirety of the State.

If I did not sacrifice the city, I would be sacrificing the entire State and all other similar cities within it.

So, I’d sacrifice the city.

Of course, I’d tell people to evacuate.
