Yes. (…interestingly no one uses the phrase, “white on white” crime, yet given the statistics and reality of segregation, it’s just as apt, and therefore (for the RW “point”) just as useless.)

If I may weigh in, throughout the trial the prosecution did a stunningly poor job of arguing their case and, at least to my jaundice eye, they were much too gleeful upon losing going so far as to giving odd, repeated assurances that they support second amendment absolutism. That is, there’s a wealth of evidence and argument that can be used for both a civil trial as well as Federal suit. (To be clear, given the initial reaction of police officers to George Zimmerman and given it’s the south I simply don’t trust the prosecutor’s office: substantively their defense is certainly not the be all and end all on the case of Zimmerman’s killing of Trayvon Martin.)

I think that’s right, AdLib. Too many people don’t realize how deeply entrenched racism is in he south. (E.g., Maher’s oddly insistent defense of Deen, a rather public demonstration, to be sure.)

i know it seems rather “retro,” but I would add strongly that voting in 2014 and 2016 will be important both because there’s a chance that legislatures will shift more to the right (some key races will lose strong, proven Democratic contenders) and because of foreseeable shenanigans after the recent Su.Ct. decision. In the south we can expect gerrymandering and last minute shifts in voter requirements, to be sure; I fear, however, that his will also become issues in parts of the north, as well. (Think Wisconsin and Ohio.)

I read your last reply and agree: with President Obama’s nomination in 2008, before his presidency, racist attacks were obvious. I was blown away by the placards at Republican rallies…and no one–no one–called them on it. (That racism exists in America isn’t something for which you need to argue to an African American: I assure you I am on the receiving end. 🙂 )

My little guy is only nine; I meant that adults should form coalitions, etc. (Of course I’d be happy to have him join me in a march.)

I read Ad Lib’s analysis of a civil case as contrasted with the DOJ’s investigating civil rights infractions, and I understand his position; however, with regard to changing the tide of procedural justice and substantive law gone bad, the judiciary lacks moral force and legislatures lack political will: the federal government has to step in. (I would reply to Ad Lib directly, but I keep losing the thread, hence my semi-reply here.) My first take, then, is that people need to pressure the Obama Administration to act. Second, there needs to be an organized, concerted effort to educate and arm people with condensed, integrated information as the Robert’s near massacre of The Voting Rights Act, Citizens United, the NRA’s stranglehold on the legislatures, and Stand Your Ground are all of a very frightening piece–this is very serious “stuff.” Citizens need to know clearly what is at stake as well as assistance with voter registration, getting proper identification, and having transportation to polls.

It’s *that* serious.

I’m “rah-rah,” of course, but the reality is that we’re competing with Dexter and whatever other drug of choice there is to be had…indeed, that’s the odd “sedation” that we seem to be witnessing. It’s not merely shock…I suspect it’s also a hasty retreat into the unreality of unimportant stuff with which we’re constantly bombarded.

(That said, I’m still contacting the NAACP tomorrow. 🙂 )

On that note, I’m off to slumber.

I hear you, and I understand the gravity. I spent a good portion of today absolutely sobbing.

I had been seriously, but with trepidation, contemplating a move south starting fall as a career advancement, but now that’s out. Some in my family think I’m over-reacting, but to be honest I’d be happy to move to Canada. (They have a much lower homicide rate than the U.S.)

Other than running away ;), my next thought is to get involved with voter drives, protest marches, and the like. I’ve heard disturbing things from a trusted source about my local NAACP, but I suspect the person confused the NAACP with the Urban League. In any event, nationally the NAACP seems the most focused regarding pressuring the DOJ into perusing a civil rights violation suit, and thats the group I hope to contact on Monday.

Last, (and pardon any toes), although I’m a person of faith I’m more than a little fed up with the “God will take care of it” talk: s/he has a lousy batting average, thus far. That is, if something is to be done, then I suspect we ourselves need to do it.

I’m in Michigan, and there are some places I wouldn’t go here…the industrial Midwest has “issues.” That said, yes, Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina and the rest of the Bible Belt (as well as Florida) are way scary.

And Vermont does sounds lovely, esp. In the fall and winter.

Well, yes: I’ve already warned my son about the police; now it’s the case that someone just imagining his being “a problem” is enough to justify his losing his life.

Where are black males safe in America when 1 is killed by either police or a vigilante every 28hours?

I understand the hyperbole (I hope that was hyperbole!),but as an African American woman with a young son I don’t want to be disempowered by cowering. I would say although vigilance and common sense are the order of the day regarding personal safety, there is strength in numbers and there are allies to be had: find them, communion with them, march with them.

Tomorrow. (Today I’m seeking solace in chocolate chip cookies and a novel. 😉 )

Hi, AbLib.

I have two questions:

First, I went to gravatar and used my email addess and Planet POV password, but it wouldn’t work. (I even checked the cases of the letters to make sure they match what’s on my profile at PPOV.) The gravatar site also wouldn’t allow me to reset my password (always the last ditch effort.) Any assistance you could give would be greatly appreciatd.

Second, I received about three PPOV replies in my email, but when I came to the site, they were no longer in that right hand column. (I’ve been busy with work.) Is there somewhere else on the PPOV site where one may go to find replier easily?
