It’s why I seldom drink anymore. Too many “pants on the head” experiences of my youth……..(True story: My sister once tried to hastily dress in the back of a car to discover that what she was trying to slip over her head was in fact underpants. It’s why I remained such a good girl for so many years – my nickname in HS was “Two” for “Goody Two Shoes”.)

True story: There once was a man in Texas who had been cheating on his wife for some time. He stumbled in early one morning, and when the wife accosted him, he denied everything. As he stripped down for bed, his wife noted that he had put his underwear on backwards. Would have been noticed if it had been that way all day, now wouldn’t it? She filed for divorce. He later got sober and did better. – AB

Sue: May I offer this? Take heart, in that many of my children from AFG and other war torn parts of the world would still rather live here. One of the things I did each year was to teach them what I truly believe is the unique experience of the U.S. – that being diversity. While also true of Canada, “others” are not welcomed nearly as warmly in many countries throughout the world. I would take the kids, sit at a river and just point out the different ethnicities and languages we could see and hear all around us. This is a nation BUILT by immigrants. Most nearly everyone came from somewhere else. So as a whole, we tend to be more welcoming – even given the Pam Geller hate groups towards Muslims. That type of idiotic behavior sometimes wakes us from our slumber and allows us to rise up in defense of those whom no one else would defend. And that, dear Sue, makes me horribly, horribly proud of this country.

I always hated the “Love it or leave it” motto from the ’60s. Why can’t you criticize it, admonish it, correct it and love it too? If you love your children, you try to steer them away from wrongdoing. Doesn’t mean you don’t love them – in fact, it can mean quite the opposite. So stand up, fight back, but don’t give up. Never, never give up. It’s worth fighting for. (see above). – AB

Awaiting news on our favorite Welshman. And btw, I love how true that is – OUR favorite Welshman, whether or not we’ve ever met him.

My two hour MB read was interrupted, but not before I got to read the touching article on the tsunami cherry tree. Reminds me of the grand old Treaty Oak in Austin, which some nut job poisoned. The tree lives, and after prayers and treatments etc. produced acorns, which hundreds grabbed up and began the Offspring of Treaty Oak. I’m sorry the tree died, but think using the trunk to make a bench is a lovely idea.

The cubs were adorable, and I just wanted to kiss them. Poosha poosha, as my Afghan girl would say.

The thinning of the Italian paintings was also of interest. To be honest, the painting was no more attractive if thin. Hmmm..perhaps there is a lesson here to be had.

Sorry I couldn’t spend the hours I had hoped, but instead I got to spend a few hours with a very dear and overwrought friend. Maybe tomorrow…..

Hi there: let me be the first, but maybe not the most correct, to guess – taro root? I love the Hawaiian language – it is to me the most melodic in the world. Love the Hawaiian cowboy (paniolo) singers. Love hula. But not a fan, I think, of the starchy food. That said, I think I remember poi being made from taro. Guess we will see tomorrow….

Off to walk, then back to grab a cuppa coffee and read MB. What a glorious day!

Hi dear Kalima! Happy Mothers Day from your tribes. They asked me to type you the greeting, as their little paws are rather sticky today.

On Trivia: down here, we call them “storytellers”. I have also heard the term “folklorists”. Don’t know if either of these is correct, but I have to give my Frenemesis a run for the crown. With her math genius son’s accomplishments, I’m worried she’ll stretch it out and I won’t be able to wear it!

Hi Kalima! Poor Mrs. Crow. Once in Big Bend, we had a huge raven who followed us around like a dog; we were tossing him/her yogurt almonds which were heavily appreciated. Until, that is, the raven mistook a white rock for an almond. It scooped it up then spit it out. It actually marched up on my friend Kerry and me to caw and scold us. When it flew off, it made a giant “splat” on my car as a sign of its disapproval. Who said that birds don’t have a sense of justice? Knock down all the hard work into building a nest and your garbage gets shredded. At least your car didn’t get “hit”.

Oh Bito: I watch the Israelis pretty closely. While you were “looking”, I was talking to our Baby Girl and planning what to have for a midnight dinner when she comes Thursday night. Hey Food Chain – Totally agree about “asparagus pee”. I had to warn my Afghan students – knowing they had never before eaten asparagus – about the phenomenon so it would not worry them when it happened. Too funny.

I love beets, carrots and fingerling potatoes with lamb chops. Yum. I toss them with garlic, lemon and butter then bake them in the oven. Each prepared separately of course.

Love the Chi town, although haven’t had much time there – mainly passing through. I did once take the L right after a Bears game, so figure I got some of the “flavor”. The music, the food, the art – much to love about that town.

Also glad you liked Sonny Landreth. Do look for him when he tours – you wont’ be disappointed.

Foodchain: I just learned to like beets a few years ago. Not a big fan prior, because when I was small, no one warned me that your urine could stain and look an unhealthy color with beets. Scared the piss out of me, it did. But I have now mastered beet-phobia and enjoy them. Good for you too. Hey – which state are you in? I keep forgetting, and shouldn’t. Mea culpa.

Hey Frenemesis – The REASON I used CAPS was simple: I went to work,had diddly jack to do, except wait for some letters to be signed, so I peeked at MB while on the clock (oh, the shame). I saw the Trivia ,and being competitive by nature and not that bright on some of the questions (Thanatology – study of thanists??), I was so FRUSTRATED that I could not log on and just ANSWER it. I had to wait for 2 hours to come home, log on and see if you had “BEET” me to it. So I REJOICED.

Okey dokey. Perhaps I’ll lessen the use of caps, even when winning against so many odds…

Kalima: Thanks also for the report from Nuristan. the Nuristanis are the red-haired green eyed Afghans. They have their own “language” (dialect) and it is the highest pay grade for interpreters, since so few speak it. Outsiders are easily recognized.

The Taliban won’t be defeated. It just simply won’t happen. I suppose that the “agreement” we now have is just to try and prevent another civil war – a la Charlie Wilson. I wish we could offer them a whole swath of land in the south and east – call it “Pashtunistan” and lure them to come for the division. Then maybe feed them all some nice oleander tea……or some bread made with ground up mountain laurels. Buh-bye!

Yeppers, Kalima – I would lay off the ‘shrooms and black bear meat for a while. (Is black bear meat a popular commodity in Japan???)

On the suicide rate: that’s so sad. On a lighter note, though – did I ever tell you about the Blov’s malaprop regarding karoshi? He was fairly stressed out with work several years ago, and gave me a warning that he just might die of “karaoke”. It’s why he is the Blovicator (note the artistic use of the letter “c” he puts in his name).

Since I am totally clueless as to which business establishments recruited Marines, I will guess a) bars or b) barbershops. Going with a theme, here.

Kalima: Does it count in yesterdays MB trivia if I told the Blov it was either Syria or Iraq? I actually typed an answer, but evidently forgot to hit “submit”. Either that, or Queen Kes hacked my system!

Off to work today, but I wanted to see you the 26% approval in your cabinet and lower you to the 9% approval of Congress we see here.

And no fair asking Engineering questions! I’ll guess salt peter for lack of any other item that “springs” to mind, and which men in the Roman Empire (known for excesses) would tend to use sparingly.

Can’t read the Syria news – too worried about my little Damascus girl and her return to be able to throw myself into what is happening. Did that for years with Afghanistan. Now learning to let go. But I will shout out for prayers/wishes/good thoughts for her, as she navigates the process of returning for her fellowship. Will keep the Planet posted. – AB

Finished with the year festivities; am tired of parades with mediocre marching bands and floats where ladies just wave. Give me some old fashioned baton twirling, I say!!!!

Prior to becoming a go-go girl at age 13, I twirled. Eight lessons with Miss Toy Brown. Never got to flaming – could not even toss and catch well – but I was hell at the horizontal and figure eights!

GOOD morning, Kalima!

I just had to look even before I go for my walk.

Wow. Monkey man. I never did that, and don’t think I ever could OR would. My initial thought is: how bad would the smell down there be?

On dog v. burglar: Can’t they just adopt a stand your ground type law? Call it “bite your arse”?

Did read one “human” story (trying to stay away from such these days -maybe I should be monkey gal). Since the shoe bomber is second only to the underwear bomber in Republicanesque stupidity (albeit terrorism), I just had to read that one. I did not find – although I just skimmed it – the definition of what “Supergrass” is. He turned “supergrass”??? WTF does that mean? Maybe I’ll have to read it more carefully.

And the photos of the day were lovely, especially the tulip festival in La Connor, WA – been there, done that. Enjoyed it immensely.

OK, off to walk and listen to the wrens and cardinals and titmice and chickadees. This new nature trail at Lollygag Estates is perhaps my favorite feature. It gets me off my duff and on my feet.

Back in an hour or so for my second cup of coffee. Need the pink mug today……-AB

OH: And I’ll guess 10% on the peanut butter. I know it’s low, but after that pink slime thing, I trust nothing.

Thirded. I didn’t even drink from my pink MB mug in protest of the silence. Even if I don’t get to read it in the morning, even if I just look at trivia (can’t let Kesmarn get them ALL right!), even if I get a chance to only glance at the photos – MB is such a source of comfort to me. Not just because of the love and care Kalima puts into aggregating the news from places that matter to me, but because it is where I catch my breath.

Welcome back, Kalima! And drat it Bito – I think you have beaten both the Queen and I on the Trivia! Now won’t you look lovely in the crown?

Good news is I’m off tomorrow, and already planning on a nice cup of coffee and a long look at the MB – either before or after the walk!
