Mark Cuban’s selfish statement the day before, about this being a slippery slope to kick out an owner over racist words, evaporated by today after the threat. So might it be more likely that this action by the NBA is less due to an awakening of conscience amongst the wealthy, white NBA team owners than the leverage that the mostly black NBA players (who were indeed acting out of conscience and principle) had to damage their wealth by uniting and refusing to play if the NBA and owners didn’t act against Sterling? All the charities he gives to always seems to be a purchase of publicity, awards, etc. (like the NAACP award he was going to get). Sterling is an egomaniac, what matters more to him than money is his ego so even though he’ll get hundreds of millions, watching the PR image he’s built up his whole life (even changing his last name to sterling out of vanity) crumble and seeing that he will be seen in sports history as being infamous, is probably the most devastating thing you could do to him. I did read about that report and it’s less surprising than it is confirming what we all pretty much know. Our laws and Congress are slaves to fundraising for re-election and the wealthy behind those funds. It helps explain the disconnect between the majority’s almost unanimous opinion on things such as gun control and government’s blocking of it. To answer your question, I think it’s only realistic to recognize that the dynamics will eventually change and turn against those currently basking in their wealth and power. It might be the replacement of a RW SCOTUS judge with a Progressive, it could be a widespread popular uprising like Occupy Wall Street that has more of a focus on direct political change, it could be the Latino population reducing white voters to a minority and/or the redistricting in 2020, in any case, it will be something because this Guilded Age is simply not sustainable. The few can’t maintain power when the many reach the point of refusing to continue suffering. The real question is what will end up being the last straw that breaks the camel’s back. Throughout history, the wealthy and powerful are always so drunk with hubris, they can’t conceive of even the possibility that they are sewing their own downfall among the many. They lie about the thousands of permanent jobs Keystone will bring when it’s only a couple dozen. They lie about how it will decrease US dependency on importing oil but the oil from the pipelines will be shipped right out to China and elsewhere. They lie about the danger the pipeline represents to the drinking water of many US states and the domino effect on the rest of the country. The good news though is that indications seem to point to Obama saying no to it. He can’t make Climate Change his top priority as he has stated if he simultaneously approves massive carbon pollution that scientists have deemed, “Game Over” for Climate Change. We do have a big fight ahead of us because if Obama says no, the Koch brothers who are heavily vested in Keystone will spend millions and pull out all the guns to pressure Obama to reverse his decision.
