After Obama’s summit, it will be clear that the GOP is hollow and dishonest on HCR and the Dems must move ahead on their own. If we can pound on them hard and only need 50 + Biden to pass something, it really is a different ballgame than it ever was before. No Lieberman, Nelson, Bayh or Snowe to pander to. Just moderate and progressive Dems and we do have enough in the Senate to pass this. I’m urging everyone to put the past aside, this is a new game with new rules and we can get what we want this time without compromising key provisions. That could be supported without throwing commitment behind the new bill before we know what it is. The Dems in Congress are working on one and Obama is going to present his own…which I would imagine is actually being drafted in consultation with top Dems in Congress. Something has to happen or they are giving Dems and Indies no reason to re-elect Dems to Congress…or even Obama to a second term. Yes, it’s BS because a Repub president would only be worse but the swing voter types don’t think long term, they just think, “What sounds good to me for right now?”. My proposition is that until there is a name, a mission statement, a specific agenda, a formal membership and an initial protest accomplished, it is not really a group yet that can be considered concrete or could be successfully promoted. By the end of this week, a name will have been chosen. The mission statement should be voted on as well to officially codify it. Then, people can present and discuss what they propose the specific agenda of the group should be, what is its specific goal and how does it intend to accomplish that. Once that is approved, then a protest could be conceived to advance the agenda. The protest(s) should be on video to edit into a video on YouTube. What I should have said is that we do not know for a fact whether he was a sociopath or if he was not but had a severe mental breakdown that led him to these actions. I agree that he was self-absorbed and self-important in his letter, he was not and should never be viewed as anything other than someone who put his feelings above the lives and well being of everyone else. I would say that there is necessarily a social context, even if it was him believing in the movement that claimed the income tax was illegal, which I think we can agree on that he seemed to believe. I’m interested in finding out the truth, that’s all. He does seem to be a Reagan Republican who believed that he could have it all and didn’t need to give back…via taxes. He was jealous of those who didn’t pay taxes. But even that scenario would allow for the overlap of feeling that the system was corrupt. As I think is self-evident from the powerful discussions we’ve been having here, I think this tragic and horrific event provides us with an opportunity to examine areas of the American psyche that need examination.
