Kilgore, you have provided quite a bit to think about in your comments on this thread.

I think you are right ONE does have to examine their own values and what one believes to be morally acceptable.

I think is partly what started my rant…I’m finding it difficult to stick to my values and beliefs and find a job that will pay the bills and keep my family financially stable.

IF it was just me, and I didn’t have my daughter to think about, (my son is pretty much on his own, now) I may be more willing to really simplify my life…sell the house, buy a house boat and live on the water. (THAT would be MY dream) BUT my daughter is an epileptic, and she has health issues….so THAT is always on my mind…I need to always be able to provide for HER needs. AND that’s were things get complicated. I have to provide for her and I, but I still want to remain true to MY ethics.

Ok…David, I’m confused…how did you determine that the article was about hate?

The article was about our society and it’s lack of VALUES….it’s about a world that is upside down that has few real opportunities within it to REALLY live by one’s ideals.

If you determine that equates to hate…well I’m thinking you may need to re-evaluate how you perceived what you read.

Oldpol…thank you. The reason I DO this, writing on blogs that is…is because I really believe we need to make serious changes in our world, especially for our children.

I SO hope that the events in WI, propel many to action! WE need to remember WE can change it…but it won’t be easy and will take REAL action!!!

WE just have to keep trying! 🙂

2CCP….yep. I , too have been SO trying to survive and remain true to what I believe…oh my god! WHAT a struggle. When I left corporate America, I truly didn’t realize how hard it would be to survive WITHOUT their support.

I was a black balled, in my profession, for about 3 years, due to MY making myself an enemy of someone with some serious power in my industry. I was vindicated after some time, BUT the damage was done, BOTH to my reputation and my views on the world I used to inhabit.

In retrospect, THAT was a good thing; morally, intellectually. and spiritually, but not economically. I’ve suffered monetarily, BUT not nearly as much as many others I encounter.

When I suffered my ‘loss’, I took the opportunity to do some thing I had never REALLY considered before. I went back to school, took on more debt, but I’m ok, with that, and started volunteering in my community, as well as started blogging. I learned MORE from these endeavors than I could possibly have imagined. In that respect i feel very privileged.

However, it has also made me very angry…there is no logical, emotional or humane reason for our current situation…and the damage its done not just financially but SOCIALLY and mentally to those who have been adversely affected…is disgusting. As a society we should be SO ashamed of ourselves.

YOUR anecdotes are proof of how far we have gone in the wrong direction.

“The American Dream…a Cautionary Tale”

I actually agree with you Adonai…the whole concept of ‘owning property’ in my mind is misplaced.

How can someone own something that is no one’s to sell? Seriously.

I tend to believe in the concepts of the Natives…which was a communal (communist like) concept about land ownership.

Even though, I “own” my property…do I really? While I have a few more freedoms than one who is renting, in what I do to the property…I’m still limited in what I do, as I have a lot in a community…and must live by the rules of the community…which includes paying the taxes on that property and keeping up that property.

Sometimes, I think this property owns me! 🙂

It’s all kind of a silly concept if you ask me.

But I like to try to understand the mindset behind it and what led to the desire to ‘own’ property.

For me, I like owning my house, because I need a place to live and want some of the freedoms that come with it, such as being able to have pets. (That’s a huge one for me!) and I like to decorate and entertain, so I don’t want to be limited in those areas either. But from an economic standpoint, I actually don’t see much of a benefit…unless you bought the property back at the VERY beginning and passed it on from generation to generation….THEN I can see it as a wealth creator.

Carlin was right. Can’t argue with that wisdom!

But I suggest instead of looking at the total number in the population, we look at the total households in the nation, which is roughly 140 million…not 300 million, which makes the 14 million number who own their own homes, not as large percentage wise.

Remember A, the 300 plus million number includes children, the infirm and the elderly. SO households is actually a more accurate measurement to determine the percentages of the populations wealth or assets.

While, I do understand what you are saying…owning a house in and of itself should not be the American dream, the idea of owning property is ingrained in the American psyche…and really dates back to when this nation was first discovered by the Europeans. It was a European construct that emanated from the days of serfdom and the inability to own anything, because all land was owned by the monarchs in Europe.

THUS being land owners, was tied to the attainment of wealth…which actually is what the idea of the ‘American Dream’ was in essence about….moving up the social economic ladder. SO owning land or a home, was consider a step up that ladder.

It’s more so about perception of having ‘arrived’ than on actual economic sense.

My grandparents came here from the ‘old country’ not because they were seeking a ‘better life’ but to escape oppression and war. THEY couldn’t stand it here, because were they came from…they were higher up on the social economic ladder than they were here. So to them, coming to the US was a major step down.

So there perception was different than those who came from a lower social strata. In addition, they felt less content.

So for those losing what they had, this is a very serious issue and is more than just about economics. It’s about long standing beliefs and dreams that sadly are lost forever, and as long as our national paradigm continues to focus on economic status, people will feel miserable if they can’t make the grade.
