AdLib, I find myself in a position of disagreeing with your post but not really being able to argue effectively against it.

I guess it really is how you look at it. But, the revenge/justice thing aside, I agree with you on pretty much everything else.

AdLib, It can be justice AND revenge. I don’t mean that they can’t be together.

And I think the only thing that has a statute of limitations that long is murder.

Killing a murderer is justice, but how is it not also revenge? Just because we dress it up with a fancy legal system doesn’t change what it is. We are avenging their murders.

And, you’re right. Captured intelligence and withdrawal are not mutually exclusive. When we do leave it would be nice to have something to take with us that we can use in the future.

Cher, I gotta agree with you on the shooting. Even if he was unarmed there was probably little chance to recognize that in the heat of the moment. But Whether he is an “enemy of the state” or a “common criminal” I personally still feel no one has the right to play executioner. But I understand.

And as far as bringing him here causing problems, I though we were the home of the brave. Or is it still just all relative?

And I appreciate the long winded response! i always love reading your opinions. I honestly do. 🙂

I was watching Martin Bashir today(I really like that guy’s show. It just seems professional all the way around)

And he was talking about the economics in Pakistan and how, I believe, a third of the population lives in poverty and a quarter of that lives on about a dollar a day.

No wonder Bin Laden valued this country. I remember Reza Aslan(love that guy too) constantly referencing poverty as probably the number one recruiting tool of terrorist leaders.

I see now that we can’t just cut off aid to Pakistan. Yes there are people there who use it for illicit purposes but we can’t doom that population to literal starvation just to teach a lesson to a group who will probably never be effected by it.

I don’t know how we press forward from here but I would like to see more communication with Pakistan not less. And I think we have the President to do that.

We are a nation of laws. I keep being told we are suppose to be “better than them”. But I guess that is a relative term.

You’re not gonna hear me complain that we shot an unarmed man in the face, considering who that man was, but I thought we were suppose to be better than that.

And how does bringing him in alive weaken us in any way? How is that a detriment to us? To abide by the laws and standards we expect of so many people. No man has the right to be another man’s executioner. But I guess sometimes it can’t be helped.

Bringing Bin Laden to New York and trying him in public would have been a great victory and very symbolic. But I can’t lament the man’s death. Either way he was going to die.

AdLib, First I didn’t mean for this post to end up on Off Topic. Thought I was still on the Bin Laden page.

Now my rebuttal.

Who said Al Qaeda was demoralized? The way people talk, this may energize them. Killing a group’s leader doesn’t always end that group. Especially when that group is a cookie cutter organization designed to spread quite easily and symmetrically without Bin Laden’s involvement.

Justice, revenge. That really depends on who you ask. If someone attacks me and it takes me ten years to hunt him down and kill him, that’s not self defense. That’s revenge. That’s the very definition of revenge. Revenge and justice may not by synonyms but they are very much related.

And you know what else could stop future attacks on America? Not staying in the Middle East. THE reason the attacks happened to begin with. A lot has been lost in the last 10 years, including perspective.

Did we kill Bin Laden just for revenge or was there a greater point to it all?

Apparently, Bin Laden’s demise changes nothing about our “war on terror”. Almost as if he doesn’t matter at all.

So killing Bin Laden was just pure hollow revenge and we can invent pretty much any reason we want to stay in Afghanistan.

I’ve seen at least one person on every network say that his death has nothing to do with why we’re over there other than wanting him dead. I thought it was the only reason we were there.

fox, I’ve been wondering that too. The way I understand it, and as Khirad has explained it, if you can’t reasonably find a place on land to bury the person, a burial at sea is acceptable.

Maybe not wanting a martyr shrine isn’t a good enough reason but I gotta tell you, I just don’t care.

People who complain that he wasn’t buried under Muslim law can go to Hell. Bin Laden wasn’t a Muslim. Calling him a Muslim is an insult to honorable practitioners of that faith. He doesn’t deserve the honor. But we gave it to him anyways when we REALLY didn’t have to.

chase, I will definitely check this book out. One of the bookstores downtown is bound to have it. Thank you for the recommendation. Never heard of Benchley. He sounds really interesting.

KT, There was probably some of that but, as Rahcel Maddow pointed out tonight, we’ve found his people in urban Pakistan before so I can’t say I’m surprised.

He had to have been paying people off and he may have thought that was enough. I wonder if he even considered a unilateral strike force just rolling in and cleaning house. He may have thought our shaky alliance with Pakistan would benefit him and we wouldn’t go in. But Obama told them 100 times he would.

I want to apologize to the nation of Pakistan. I let my anger get the better of me. After all this time I shouldn’t be so quick to condemn an entire country for actions they obviously had no control over. Some group knew where he was and that is who we should be going after. Not an entire country.

I still think Pakistan is a “terrorist state” and has always been the key to this along with Saudi Arabia but we can’t keep doing this the same way.
