Hell, I enjoyed the after anything events. Organized parties are lame and I hate most of the people who go to them. I remember the party at the Mayor’s house after senior prom. Of course the mayor wasn’t there but his son LOVED to party. That was the night I basically quit drinking. Not even 21 yet and I was already overdoing it. I can’t even really remember most of it. They didn’t really become a movement in this country til the early 20th century and haven’t really had a lot of political endeavors. It seems cliche to keep bringing it up but you don’t have to go back too far to when we believed a black man would never be elected President. A “religious test” is common in elections to high office. Like bito said earlier, religion is a touchy subject in the country. Even things said in jest, or with no malicious intent, can be taken the wrong way. They say friends should never discuss religion or politics. Which kind of goes counter to what this country is all about. We’re a secular society. That doesn’t mean we distrust or oppress religion. It just means we put no religion above another. A great little idea. The problem is that various religions, by nature, seeks to assert themselves as the dominant faith in the world. It will lead, and has led, to many conflicts. Politics is the same way. Both sides seeking to be the dominant force in the country. A country that is the dominant force in the world. Here, in this Presidential race, you again have the crossroads of religion and politics. I don’t know if it is wrong to base your dislike for a candidate purely on issues of faith. How can a religious person NOT have that enter into every decision they make, fair or not? And I can’t really hold it against them. I admire people committed to their faith. It’s a strength of character I admittedly do not have, so I can’t really say my judgements are any better than theirs. And I’m gonna wrap up since I’m rambling now but, I respect Mitt Romney’s faith and his commitment to it. Like any other person. I believe the venom pointed toward Romney regarding his religion is from uninformed bigots. The Mormon religion had a dubious beginning but it has left much of those early “birth pains” behind, just as early Christians did. A lot of people hated Mormons for the longest time because they may have indirectly fanned the flames that led to the Civil War. Everywhere he went, Smith challenged the sovereignty of the federal government while also begging for their support. A terrible thing to do while talk of secession is going through the country. In Utah, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois, Joseph Smith attempted to form his own “kingdom”. Every place threw them out, Missouri even brought federal troops against him and he was arrested and charged with treason. While in Illinois he petitioned the government to make the land he had bought a separate independent territory. Smith announced his plan to run for President as a Third Party and his followers proclaimed him “king” of his little world. He was, of course, again arrested for treason. This time he was shot and killed in jail before his trial. Some men were charged with the killing but all were acquitted. My guess is that they were all hardcore anti-secessionists or some group he had pissed off during his travels. Hard to say. The Mormon Church worked hard to move past all that. They kept the core of what makes their religion special: deep family bonds, a humble attitude that seems so out of place today, and a deep faith in Jesus and the goodness of all mankind. I remember that episode of South Park you refer to. I think they got pretty close to reality. Mormons are just really nice people. Their religion puts such an emphasis on modesty, humbleness, and moral character. Doesn’t mean they can’t be greedy and ambitious like Romney. They’re still human. It just means that maybe, MAYBE, if Romney won, he wouldn’t be half the asshole Bush was. Probably still an asshole, but a Mormon asshole. When outside revenue began to disappear they did very much turn on their own. On top of the plundering and mistreatment of their wounded, they bullied wealthy Southern families for money and resources, executed hundreds of innocent civilians they considered “spies”, and declared all slaves “state property” meaning they could be taken from their “owners” without compensation and used for whatever purposes the government wanted. That last law didn’t go over too well and didn’t last very long. And at the end of the war, they very much turned on black folk. Here was their entire way of life walking away and they had no legal power to stop them. So what’s an angry Southerner to do? Why, form a hooded lynch mob and “put those Negroes in their place”. The South NEVER got over the war. I’ve always liked “Dr. Jack”. I think he did a good, decent thing for a great many people. But I’ve always had a strange outlook on life. I love life, living it, and experiencing it, but I’ve never held it as something sacred. The ravages of disease and old age kinda put a damper on the whole “life is sacred” thing. What is right and just about telling someone they can’t chose where, when, and how they die? What is just about forcing someone to endure mind numbing pain just to satisfy your personal beliefs or shallow sense of “decency”? You gotta love a country that allows the poor and hungry to die on the street but still cops a “holier than thou” attitude about the “virtue of life”. I don’t think a lot of people ever give up on life but, at some point, life gives up on them. Then what are they to do? Continue a futile struggle against the end? We hardly bat an eye at the “casualties of war” but what about the “casualties of life”? On the spiritual side, Dr. Kevorkian was doing the Lord’s work. When we can no longer heal the body, why not release the soul? What attachment do we have to this “crude matter”, as Yoda would say. From the stars we are born and to the stars we will return. Find happiness in the time we had with them, and rejoice in their return to the whole. I wish he could have seen more progress before his passing. A justification for the good works he has done. But it’s not like I don’t understand the necessity of it. A lot of the soldiers are there simply because they have no other choice. Can’t be mad at them. I remember my senior year of high school, the recruiters were everywhere. I almost signed up. A lot of my friends were. But I wasn’t poor. I had a chance at school. I had a choice. Some of them just didn’t. Looking back, I’m glad I made that decision. There’s nothing honorable about dying in a desert, thousands of miles from home, for a bit of profit. I feel bad for the soldiers even though I shouldn’t. They still made the choice to join. They’re all proud of their service. The country didn’t make the decision to send them over there. One man did, LYING THROUGH HIS FUCKING TEETH THE WHOLE TIME, and we did nothing to stop him. Not only did he send them into a no-win situation, he robbed them of an honorable death in a meaningful battle. No soldier deserves that. So who was I talking about there? LBJ or Bush? If Tim Thomas is playing as well or better in goal than he was in the last series, Vancouver could be in trouble. But Boston has been terrible in power plays. They need to cash a few of those in for some goals if they want to win. Vancouver may have come through a tougher conference but Boston has a lot of play makers. I think it will either come down to the goalies or Boston’s inability to score when it needs to which is weird since it was never really a problem in the regular season. And yeah, the fact you have two highly physical teams with hot goalies means this could be along brutal series. Great hockey. I say Vancouver in 7. Miami may have more talent in the group they play but Dallas has a great bench and that hurt Miami in the regular season. Even weak teams with a decent bench gave them trouble. Getting Haslem and Miller back to 100% is a big boost for Miami. They really do have the team now that they’ve wanted all year. Call me crazy but I think a big match up is gonna be Jason Kidd and Mario Chalmers. Chalmers may be younger and quicker but so was Westbrook and Kidd made him look silly sometimes. Just a crafty vet who still has a step or two left in him. Bosh has to own Brendan Haywood when he’s in there. Chandler is a great defender so I won’t be surprised if Bosh struggles early on against him and I doubt Nowitzki will play him much so, Bosh HAS to own Haywood.
