KT, I look at music as something that has evolved. The music of Ancient Egypt and Greece evolved into the music of ancient Rome and Japan. This music evolved into the music of Medieval Europe and Asia. This music evolved into the music of the great composers. Their music evolved into modern music.

And who knows where it goes from here. So the music of our ancestors never really disappears. It is still there. it is now only a part of a greater whole.

Like dinosaurs. They still live today in the DNA of birds.

I can see the difference of opinion. Writing and painting is great but I think music has a greater transformational aspect to it. Is more universal and brings people together more than any other art form.

And let me rephrase the statement then. Music is the greatest thing we have ever discovered! 🙂

KT, Nothing we know of moves faster than light. There are things that move as fast. Caru pointed out radio waves earlier. Electromagnetic energy. Gravity.

New discoveries in physics though may allow us to travel faster than light. Notice I use travel as opposed to move. It is, so far, physically impossible to move faster than light. But, we could reach a destination before light.

A lot of crazy but physically grounded theories involving moving space while remaining relatively motionless and the possibility of wormholes.

KT, Firstly because of friction. we need tremendous force to push mass through our atmosphere. and overcome gravity pushing us back down. Btu gravity is quite weak. You only need jump to prove that. You can’t jump very high because of force and friction and you don’t stay up very long because of gravity pushing you back down.

The Earth isn’t pulled around the sun. It’s actually pushed. Mass warps space. The Earth basically rides a wave around the sun.

And you have to go some ways past the moon to actually “escape” the Earth’s gravity. Movement in space is far easier though since there is no atmosphere.

This is one reason why shuttle launches take place so close to the equator. Less air to push through.

Sadly you are wrong. Though your logic to get there does appear sound on the outside.

It’s a trick question. One of the first physics riddles I ever heard. The answer is both. We would experience both effects at around the same time.

Gravity and light are constant. Move at pretty much the same speed. The sun creates both effects. It is theorized that gravity is a field but there still has to be particles carrying it. Gravitons if you will. light is the same way. It’s a wave but also an assemblage of particles.

The gravity created by the sun will take about the same time to disperse as light does.

Let’s say the sun disappears from this universe. It’s gone. Instantaneous transmission.

Which effect would we here on Earth feel first? The loss of light, or the loss of the sun’s gravitational hold?

Though I wouldn’t rule out the fact we may be missing something concerning gravity. Gravity is the last piece to the cosmic puzzle. If we can link it’s effects on the micro and macro world, we’ll be in the home stretch as far as developing the “Theory for Everything”.

Like the concept of gravity. WTF?! There are textbook definitions but they are sorely lacking in broader detail. People think gravity pulls objects. It pushes them. Gravity is the weakest force in the universe yet it keeps everything bound to this rock. Does mass create gravity when it warps space or is gravity an all encompassing field that covers the universe?

Still a lot of study left to be done.

No is the shortest answer to Question #2, though Caru is getting pretty deep with it.

You and pretty much everything else in the universe are made up of mostly empty space. to go one level higher, the observable matter in the universe only makes up around 10% of what is actually there. We know this because the effects of gravity are too great for the amount of observable matter to create. Bonus Question: Where’s the rest of the matter?

So your desk is not solid. You aren’t either. If there is so much empty space, why can’t you slide your hand through the desk?
