There are protests in Saudi Arabia. Small, but it’s Saudi Arabia. It’s amazing when one person speaks out against the government let alone a hundred or more.

If these protests gain even a little bit of headway and increase in size, then everything we have come to know about the Middle East in the last 3 decades no longer applies.

Of course it is Saudi Arabia. I expect this to go away and the people to be “dealt with”. But still, it was enough today to worry oil investors and the stock market.

Revolution in Saudi Arabia means a world revolution. How could it not? They are the world’s gas pump. They have billions sunk into every major country on Earth. Most of the world is one Saudi revolution away from fucking chaos.

Definitely keeping my eye on this one.

KQ, I don’t think there is an objective truth in this argument on either side.

Rationalizing is reasoning.

Ethics and morals are debatable, period. Intent vs. action is not a clear thing.

And I still like Machiavelli.

The ends justify the means.

*EDIT*: I assumed nefarious was on par with evil here. I am sorry if I misinterpreted you.

But that’s the common misconception about Machiavelli.

He wasn’t evil. He didn’t propose doing “nefarious things” just for the sake of doing it that way.

America burned thousands of Japanese alive to save millions of casualties in a ground invasion of Japan. The second bomb is debatable but was that first one a nefarious act? To unilaterally sacrifice thousands of civilian lives to save millions of casualties? It did achieve a great good in the eyes of many.

To me, the ends justify the means. Provided those ends are beneficial.

Abby, I can’t believe I’m the optimistic one here. I’m always the one saying it will only get worse.

Maybe it’s where I’m from. To see real poverty everyday, to watch people with little find happiness and joy in what they have. I’ve lived poor, paycheck to paycheck, and quite comfortably in my short life. I haven’t been out in the world long but I’ve met so many great people. Seen so many great things being worked on.

We still have yet to see America at it’s best. It’s coming. Science is going to change the world in dramatic ways over the next few decades. We just have to hang on til then. I believe in this place and these people. We will win. I’m sure of it.

But, it will get worse before it gets better. It always does.

If you want the people in America to care like Michael Moore, then every city has to start looking like Detroit.

I’m an “ends justify the means” kind of person. But I won’t argue your point on this. The “ends” are not beneficial to anyone but a select few.
