This week, an amazing documentary on The Beatles by Peter Jackson debuted on Disney+ and displays the breakup of the band and their creative process in creating the songs for their Let It Be album and their famous rooftop (and final) concert.
So this weekend’s music thread is dedicated to that one-in-a-million combination of talented people who changed the world of music forever. Share your favorite Beatles songs, whether by them or a great cover version by another artist.
Alright, me and other drummers give Ringo shit, but he wasn’t completely awful. Does he make my top 100 best list? No, but he’s not completely horrible.
I used to think of Ringo as an average-at-best drummer but heard many respected drummers who came after him of how influential he was to them. Clearly, it wasn’t his power or speed but apparently, there was something about his style that they found unique.
I always found it amusing when they show old footage and when asked who their favorite Beatle was, some women said Ringo. I suppose he was the little puppy dog to them. He seemed like the most easygoing of the four of them and in the doc, he definitely is despite all the twists and turns. The only thing he was adamant about was not wanting to travel to play their live show.
And when George quits in the middle of rehearsals, Ringo comes across as the most understanding and compassionate though they all care about working it out with George.
And the lack of ego and hubris by all of them, especially McCartney and Lennon, after conquering the world of pop and rock and being legends in their own time, is very surprising.
A far cry from the theme of bragging about money, sex, etc. in a lot of rap and hip hop. And while I’m at it, you kids get off of my lawn!
That is my point. Women love him. He kept the band together. The weird thing is, whenever I heard a Beattles song with a great drum track I looked in the liner notes, and it was McCartney laying down the track.
Ringo is a great human being an a natural drummer. I equate him with Lars Ulrich of Metallica. Nothing fancy, but definitely the rock.
There are so many egos in music. I know of session drummers that play their role even. I have not watched the doc yet, but as a proud drummer, he’s nothing special. Back beat two and four.
No, the bigger deal is his personality and how the last thing they needed was another ego. That’s how I approach him and how other drummers have as well. He knew his role and was humble.
I’m just telling you as a lifelong drummer … there’s nothing he does wrong, but also, as a drummer, there’s nothing he does that is particularly amazing, either.
This was a very good review of the doc. Just finished it myself and it is fascinating to see how they developed their songs, it was far more casual than I had thought, their depth of knowledge on composition and music theory seemed just beneath the surface, all you saw was what seemed more instinctual about how songs should be played and sung.
Since so much of popular music, today is electronically generated and not played by people on instruments, I think this may seem both archaic and a vanishing art. So much of science, discovery and art are happy accidents and unfortunately, the diminishing use of actual instruments by musicians diminishes the opportunities for discoveries and “happy accidents.
Don’t get me started on that rabbit hole. I was just talking to a friend I had who is a music teacher about the Phrygian mode.
Am I a drummer? Yes, but I also took piano lessons and music theory in the Portland Youth Philharmonic. Et cetera.
Other than my favorite best drummer ever… [I’ll stop, I’ve warmed up to him – it’s just as drummers… oh you like Ringo… uggggghhhhhhh – yeah – he’s the best…..]
This is definitely my favorite Slovenian band though
Is it me or are the boys on the way to a torch rally?
My favorite Beattle like duh. Other than Ringo, the best drummer ever
Well, that was awkward. But if you’re playing Sitar Hero, this was a bit more successful for George.
Ringo is the best drummer ever.
Okay, jokes aside
Or should it have been this:
