  • AdLib : Think about the legislative agenda for Obama this year. Revising the tax system so the wealthy pay more and it’s fairer, cutting the deficit without slashing social services (or military unfortunately), immigration reform, SS and Medicare reform so that the systems are secure but not harmed…and the Repubs have to deal on all of it in the end. And he’ll probably appoint at least two SCOTUS judges if not 3. Consider the legacy of change under Obama after two terms, can’t think of a more transformational President since FDR (LBJ did accomplish some big things too but not as many as Obama will have).

Look at the Voter ID suppression, the blowback was very motivated minority voters, the exact opposite result the Repubs and ALEC planned on. When it comes to rank and file Repubs being fed hateful propaganda against Dems, if they begin to see Dems as decent people who just have different opinions, the blowback could be a real exodus from the GOP.

  • AdLib : KQ – The cuts could hurt things like education, school meals, health and science funding, etc. So, there are a lot of serious social services that could be slashed even though SS and Medicare are protected (not sure if Medicaid is fully protected, do you know?).

  • kesmarn : I saw one analyst who said that the fiscal cliff — in a sense — pits the health care industry vs. the military industrial complex. Each is hoping the other gets way fewer dollars. There may be something to that. Godzilla vs. King Kong.

  • AdLib : Murph – So true, once again we have a phony construct by the media and the powers that be that is a fake crisis. Nothing of great consequence happens on 1/1/13. It is a cumulative thing over time so Obama’s waiting out the Repubs is absolutely fine as a strategy, if he can’t get real cooperation beforehand.

  • AdLib : Bito – Actually, today Obama just said he wants the wealthy not to get a tax cut…but he didn’t say anything specific about insisting they have their rates go up to 39% which was smart. He should indeed be open to revising the tax code to get the same revenues even if their nominal rate is 34%. But…he should hold over their heads the threat of an increase in the gross percentage.

  • kesmarn : There’s nothing like being in a position in which you don’t have much to lose. Without worry about re-election, the Prez is in a good place to get tough.

  • MurphTheSurf3 : The FISCAL CLIFF is a scary, buzz phrase and not accurate. The impact of going off this “cliff” will be a slow motion fall down a gentle slope. It can happen and be reversed in phases, bill by bill. I suggest that Obama letting it happen is a very good way to do….you get rid of what you do not want and pack back what you do.

  • AdLib : Kes – That’s the course I’m supporting as well. There is no way Obama gets hurt by standing tough and insisting that the Repub House approve tax cuts for the 99%. And the only way the Repubs who signed Grover’s pledge will sign on is if they are de facto voting against cutting taxes. This is a way to hang them on their own petard.

  • kesmarn : Kalima posted a Krugman article on the need for toughness this go-round. He said even if the Repubs hold out up to and beyond the fiscal cliff date, Obama has to call their bluff and stay strong.

  • AdLib : Bito – If Obama and the Dems back Boehner’s plan to only revise the tax system, they are walking away from the threat of increasing taxes on the wealthy to 39%.

  • AdLib : Bito – I believe in negotiating from a position of strength when you have it. Right now, Obama stands firm on increase of taxes for the wealthy and TCs for the 99%. If that doesn’t happen by Jan 1, the taxes go up on everyone and Obama and the Dems point at The Repubs in the House as the reason why…since the Senate has already passed the tax cut for the 99%. Obama could really campaign with the public against the Repubs in The House refusing to cut their taxes and they would be destroyed. I don’t know if they’re ignorant enough to force him to go there but he should be prepared. He has to deliver on real tax increases on the wealthy and he has all the leverage to do so.

It now makes sense to me why people like me were contacted to work in my rural county and to serve as organizers. McCaskill’s unsuccessful run for governor where she concentrated on the urban areas almost exclusively apparently led to this wider ranging, and harder to run strategy.

For the past 2 weeks my organization has been hell bent for leather pushing Prop. 39 that closes a huge corporate tax loophole AND directs half the recovered revenue to entry level green jobs. That’s HUGE for communities of color and those never headed to college. We worked this thing to death – and we mobilized communities across the state. I’m now coming down off the high – and crashing!! See you all Tuesday – and keep calling and doing whatever you can for the outcome! Keep the faith!

  • choicelady : Murph – I think we instinctively understand what Lakoff dicusses on “moral messaging” – finding that key ground we share with others and respecting them for sharing it with us. Then you can move on from there. You did that also with the gifts you give by helping people find health care coverage. I did a lot or oral history work – and I never showed up at people’s homes without SOMETHING to give them in exchange for their giving me their lives. I’ve had other historians sneer at this – but honestly I get stuff and develop ongoing relationships they will never have. It’s all about being human and seeing other people’s value.

  • MurphTheSurf3 : Hey Ad Lib….here is a story for you….The Lysistrata Ladies have been regulars at the McCaskill HQ. Heard today that at the Wednesday evening Bible Study the Pastor gave a mini-sermon regarding demoncrats who were drawing certain women in the congregation away from the Gospel and that the men who loved them needed to exercise their Biblical authority in the family and call them back to God’s way of life. The woman who told me that said the ladies sat there, heard the pastor out and then one of them announced to the entire group that she and a bunch of her friends were volunteering for McCaskill against Akin and that if anyone wanted information they could ask them. The other ladies in the group raised their hands to show who they were. Today they brought several more.
