VB, it is difficult for one who didn’t grow up in Ireland at that time, to comprehend the thrall that the Catholic Church had over the population. After independence from Great Britain, the founding fathers of the Irish Free State, as it was at the time,wanted to ensure that the majority of the people in Ireland could not be ruled by those of a differing religion. So, unfortunately, they incorporated a Clause in the Irish Constitution recognizing the special place the Catholic church had in the free state. This had the unfortunate result that the Church almost became the ruling force in Ireland for many years and their power and arrogance knew no bounds. Priests had no problem castigating liberal thinking from the pulpit on Sundays, putting the fear of God into anyone who might have the temerity to bring up such Mortal Sins as divorce, Abortion, Illegitimate births and the like. The Government also abrogated their responsibilities to take care of the unfortunate, basically outsourcing orphanages and the like to the Church. This toxic period thankfully has come to an end, but the echoes and consequences are here for many, many years to come. ‘Philomena’ has yet to appear here in Australia, but I’ll be going, if only to remind myself of those grim, gritty, horrible ’50s in Ireland, where I grew up. You had to be there.

You’re right, Nirek. It is a furtive tax, usually paid by those who can least afford the gamble. But what irritates me more is the spurious claim that a winner gets all the Money! If taken as a bulk payment, you get about half ( not to be sneezed at, I admit) after the tax you’ve already paid! But if you take it in annual bites, you only get the INTEREST on the Principal, never the Full Monte. In many countries around the world, state-licenced or sponsored lotteries are TAX FREE. I wish it were the same in the Land Of The FREE!

Well, Fergie and Nirek, isn’t this a great site. We can have disagreements and resolve little disputes without either Big Bro or trolls going ape. p.s. I agree, Fergie, that that bozo has done so much more harm than good. It’s his own fault for firstly sucking up to the TP, and than bleating when it came back to bite him you know where. I understand that Kleenex shares have jumped a Dollar!

Oh, dear Adlib. Such erudition from you all. I wilt at the idea that I might ever get round to penning such wonderful stuff.It makes my puny efforts seem so futile. But, I’ll carry on, hoping to bring either a laugh or a salient point to proceedings. what an incredible site. If only I’d known about it years ago.

Vale, Peter O’Toole. A good friend of my late father,another Irish actor. Bon-vivant, ruffian, rascal, comedian, incredible actor and all around good guy. His bouts with Richard Harris were legend. It’s funny, but next to ‘Laurence’, my favourite movie of his was, believe it or not, “What’s new, Pussycat” Such a vast repertoire

Hi, Adlib or Kalima.

I use Internet Explorer and, since subscribing to POB, my Tab and Address lines now show the WordPress Logo, even when I’m on my home page which isn’t WP or POV. Any ideas?
