Well, in a few hours I will be attending my High School 50th. Reunion in Dublin, Ireland. No, I won’t be actually there, but in contact via Skype Conference. What a wonderful thing to be able to do. My School, CBS Westland Row, is in a less than salubrious part of Dublin. I’ve said it before, but for the new friends, ‘The Row”, as it was called, wasn’t THAT rough, but anyone with more than one ear was a sissy!
I wiped the dust off my feet as I left, vowing never to even think about the gaff, but time has mellowed me, so I’ll happily chat with the 25 survivors of the Class of ’64 who will be there. And I’ll toast them with some Scotch and Coke in a Waterford Old Granddad glass. It will be 4.00 AM here in Melbourne when I do, so I’ll probably be a bit incoherent by then! God only knows if I can surface in time for vox Pop, but I’ll try. Wish me Luck!

Fergie1, you’re a mind-reader! I agree with so much of what is in these comments. I do remember Australia in the late ’70s-80s as a place to be happy in, but not these days, for all of the reasons listed. Such a shame. Well done for highlighting the fact to others that the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere. Here, its burning in a bushfire! I’m sure a lot of Americans can look inwardly and say to themselves – ‘It’s just like here!”

HELP!!!

I was posting to the Weekend Music area and got a blank screen with ” You are posting Comments too quickly – slow down!”

I’m not the fastest mouse in all Mehico, so I don’t understand. And I most certainly do not want to run foul of the PlanetPOV gods. Please advise me.

Confused, I think that HP has abandoned, or is abandoning, any pretext of open, liberal-leaning dialogue which is what drew me to it in the first place. The trolling, then FB, now FB comments only, seem to enhance that situation. I don’t, nor ever will, have a FB account. There is WAY too much information available to trolls there, and you have to watch absolutely everything you enter. Best to leave HP alone for good.

This puts a bad taste in your mouth. Disgraceful. Gives a new cynical slant on ‘collateral damage’, doesn’t it? Well, here’s how the GOP ‘take care of our people in uniform’:

Don’t pay them a living wage, send them out with often inefficient weapons and clothing, and if they get hurt, well that’s a tragedy, but what can we do about it? Oh, and keep ordering overpriced, underperforming weaponry from the Big Boys, and pay billions in waste.

I’ve been asked a fair bit recently about Australian Politics. Well, I don’t know much, but as I mentioned before, we do have the Southern Hemisphere Chapter of the GOP and now our very, very own Dubya clone in the guise of our Prime Minister, Tony ( the Monk) Abbott. “Abbott, who took office last September, then smirked for the briefest of moments and winked — unleashing a tidal wave of criticism, tweets and headlines,” Terrence McCoy writes.

“This, of course, is nothing new for Tony Abbott, who’s quickly becoming one of the world’s most hated prime ministers.”

But the article doesn’t end there, going on to attack the government’s recent budget which it describes in harsh terms.

“He just unveiled a draconian austerity budget that analysts call the most extreme and least popular of the past four decades in Australia.

“His approval rating has plunged to 30 per cent.”

Mr Abbott has also had to confront another “scandal”, the newspaper claims, referring to his daughter’s $60,000 design school scholarship.

“Team Abbott said she snared the scholarship on merit alone, but classmates question that assertion,” it says.

The PM’s previous comments on climate change and his decision to restore the “honorific title” of “dame” also get a mention, as well as an “irreverent hashtag” #MorePopularThanAbbott.

And Al Jazeera America has dubbed Abbott “Australia’s George Bush”.

In an opinion piece published on their website, Melbourne-based writer Tom Burns says Bush and Abbott have similar political tactics and policies and claims both are deeply religious.

“At a religious convention, Bush once claimed that God wanted him to be president. Although Abbott has never presumed a divine right to rule, at one stage of his life, he trained to be a Jesuit priest. (This is particularly unusual in Australia given its relative irreligiosity compared to the US),” Burns writes.

The Huffington Post branded the PM a “creep” and quoted Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young calling him a “grub”.

It’s not the first time Tony Abbott has come out looking a villain to the international community.

Julia Gillard won global support for the now infamous misogyny speech in which she turned allegations of sexism against then Speaker Peter Slipper back against then Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

“I say to the Leader of the Opposition I will not be lectured about sexism and misogyny by this man (Mr Abbott),’’ Gillard said at the time.

“I will not. And the Government will not be lectured about sexism and misogyny by this man. Not now, not ever.’’

And at one point she sneered at Mr Abbott, saying he was “now looking at his watch because apparently a woman’s spoken too long’’.

Brilliant, glenn. The only thinng I can think of to add is so glaringly obvious that I hesitate to mention it. Could something go in on the lines of: Please stop Operation American Spring from claiming title to ‘We, The People”. It was the genuine We the People who elected these persons into office. There cannot be more than one WTP, surely!

Great note, KT. I, for one, cannot wait for him to take over. David made so much mileage out of Dubya and the GOP/TP. So it follows that SC is THE MAN to continue showing those cretins for what they are – hypocrites, liars, spinners, bloviating shysters,venal ratbags – did I say hypocrites. The best thing is that the transition is a year away and the looney right are bleating about it already! Oh, it also occurs to me that we rarely, if ever, see Right-wing satire of Dems. An oxymoron, perhaps, with emphasis on the -moron? Perhaps it’s because the hatred, paranoia and inner loathing have stitched their humor dial to -11!
