I don’t know what’s happening in the USA, but it is not a recent phenomenon. It is just more visible today due to social and official media and CCTV footage. When I worked in IBM in Ireland in the late ’60s, a co workers cousin in the US was shot and killed by policemen in Boston. He was there on vacation and was near where a robbery had taken place. When he was challenged, he stopped and put his hand to his back pocket, reaching for his passport. They shot him 4 times. This type of ‘shoot first justify later’ is endemic and has been for generations of cops. they aren’t all like Blue Bloods, though many are. BTW, I sympathize with cops who put themselves in harm’s way daily. The stresses must be intense. If you listen to the high-pitched talk from the cop in the Philando Castile video, it is clear that there is a huge amount of fear and adrenaline involved. Elsewhere, Adlib has onpinioned that there are many people employed as police who shouldn’t be allowed near a letter opener, never mind an officially sanctioned lethal weapon. And soo it goes.
