Time Out for OT – Vol 6

I have never seen a reporter step on a president’s answers the way this guy did. It was not an interview. It was a dressing down. Or an attempt at one. Inexcusable.

I would have objected if someone had treated Bush that way. When people were laughing at the shoe story, I was asking — where was the secret service. How did the second shoe ever get thrown.

This is a man who was elected by the majority of the country as our head of state. What Bret thought he was doing — I can’t even imagine.

That sounds like what I’m doing I have a cell and internet by cable and that’s it. No cable TV (no TV at all) and no LAN line. I really like things this way. Just be sure to keep your cell charged up!

It’s easy for people to vent on the net — they’re sitting alone with their anger, they don’t have to face anyone who might object, they get validation from like-minded people. That’s the only problem w the internet — it’s very easy to end up in an echo chamber.

And it’s not too surprising that internet hate groups would mirror the growth of hate groups that’s occurring off the internet.

The Citizens United decision made two assertions that are nowhere to be found in the constitution:

1) Corporations are people

2) Money = speech

Both are wrong. We don’t tax speech. I can’t walk into a 7-11 and say… “How many words do I need to say to buy this hot dog?” SAY does not equal PAY.

Student-Loan Bill Begins Showdown Week

The push for student-loan legislation, carrying the potential of billions of additional dollars for higher education, enters its showdown week with the expected release Monday of a new official cost estimate that may help determine its fate.

The legislation would end the bank-based system of distributing federal student loans and channel the savings into Pell Grants and other education programs. Democratic leaders in Congress, after months of waiting, are preparing to combine it with their equally long-awaited health-care legislation in a maneuver they hope will win enough votes to pass both measures by the end of this week or early next week.

The article makes a good case for keeping this provision in the health care bill.

“It is clear that in this poisoned political climate,” said Richard T. Williams, a higher-education lobbyist at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a consumer-advocacy organization, “there will be no second chance to pass the student-aid bill if it is not included” with the health-care bill in a single package.
