Funny, good we still have a sense of humor after the last couple of weeks at HP. I got a reply to an old posting today from one of the snarks, a small minded childish comment. I laughed and felt no sense or need to pound him back. Gee that was freeing.

Thanks about the OT and other things. I’m sure it’s going to take a while to get used to it. Then again if I was still posting at HP I could do it while I wait for my bland posts to get through the mods. Here things seem to go quickly. I assume we self police the really vile comments? Some of the ones that made it through HP just astonished me

Homeless

Cher, Great article. My best friend from the Nam came home but his mind stayed over there. I lost him fifteen years ago, died alcoholic and homeless and alone. Hard to read and think about but that’s how we learn, grieve, grow and move on. I wish his name could be on the wall with some of our friends who died over there but that’s part of the agony of the times. They are the hidden casualties of that war. I wonder what the final count will be?

A lot of the homeless appear to be either those with pre-existing mental health issues who can no longer be institutionalized because the states closed the mental health facilities, others are sadly, PTSD, many from Viet Nam never made it home, bound in their own particular brand of hell. Many of these men and women (far fewer of course in those days) actually came home and seemed OK for a long time. But downturns in their careers, losses within the family, something caused them to snap and their lives disintegrated. Now we add to that the younger men and women (more of the latter this time around) who are out on the streets because the current VA is overwhelmed and under-prepared for the influx of new people needing help. Now we are piling on a bit because the explosion of the housing bubble has created another new class of homeless and what can we possibly do to help these people and all the others when health care services are contracting around us? We can’t so we are faced with a perplexing dilemma. What do we do with these people? What can we do to help them? Why are we abandoning those who, in many cases, gave everything they had and came home imperfect, overwhelmed by the things they saw and did? What of the people who listening in good faith to sharks doing loans for homes they couldn’t afford but let themselves get sucked down the golden path because they wanted the American dream like everyone else. It’s all very sad. I think, I laugh actually, because to write something like this on the dark side would have me beset by snarks and trolls tearing me apart. So many of you are right here. This place, for now, is safe to ponder, grieve and explore your own feelings and experiences.

Kilgore, Great post. I walked away from a very low six figure income to build furniture. I have had so many people from the “old” days who seem astonished I could ever bear to give up the trappings. To be honest there are times when the cash flow is laboring (like the last two years of economic crisis for so many former customers) but when I put my head down at night in my modest abode I can sleep with a clear head and not anywhere near the angst I used to feel. It seems with earning comes stress, or at least earning doing something you don’t love. Now I have a passion and a much simpler life and behold, I wouldn’t trade places with myself from five years ago for anything. Thanks for sharing. I suspect that wasn’t easy but it’s good to know and I respect you for telling the story

When is all in good fun too far, even with Sarah Palin?

I don’t have any love for her highness. At the same time I don’t wish anyone be taken out by some crackpot(s) who found their message on the internet. So I am torn. I think she deserves some of her own medicine, esp since she plays the victim card repeatedly and her fans continue to shower her with adulation. The only good I see is that her fan base is shrinking. It will probably freeze at a hard core level but that’s not enough to do anything more than make noise if she persists in positioning herself as a candidate. I also believe the right wing power base is tiring of her and once they see she’s maxed out her welcome they’ll find a way to discredit her and she’ll be left to the chicken buffet circuit. She’ll still make money but I think her star has peaked. Which brings me back to why AH continues to pummel her readers with more new stories about her. I did note in passing today that the new posts there about her are drawing very few responses so far. Perhaps that’s moderation but I’m guessing that the defection is hitting them hard.

As for Sara, I made a promise to myself to contribute as little as possible to her story this month. So far I’m doing pretty well. Today was an aberration to post this.

That’s only because we related it to what we know. Some people see the army as the instrument of maintaining order instead of as an aggressive war making force. How our own army would react here is a great question

How come when I played that game my sisters got the Idaho bakers and gave me the small red potato? I never could get all those parts on. Of course I got even by putting one of my sisters completed project in the oven and baking it. My old man made me clean the oven naturally. Melted Mr P parts do not come off easy,

Just heard an aside that the protesters tell the reporter they went to the palace and the tanks guns were pointed toward them. Suddenly the tanks all turned their cannon toward the palace and started hoisting the Egyptian flag – that’s when you know it’s over!

Funny how network TV got their report done and went back to soothing the masses with game and talk shows. Don’t want to give the majority of us to get any ideas – HAHA

Did the military run him out? Has he already left the country and they had to announce it because someone saw him in Dubai?
