One night about a month ago someone who I was a fan of posted about either having gone to a site or knowing someone who did. She said that when we saw someone with few fans and I think a four digit number behind it they were paid from a specific right wing website. Of course there were three or four immediate snarks back, ugly replies, all from low to no fans with the name and four letters behind them. Ten minutes later the original post and ALL the replies were gone, poof. But I remembered and I think that was one of the first major cracks in my relationship with HP. If someone was paying people to come there and raise hell and get paid for it then something was very very wrong there. From that point on whenever I saw one of those people I called them out as a paid troll, most of them disappeared pretty fast. Sort of a backhanded snark, the way they talk down when they are discussing progressive religious responses. Almost as though they give the headlines to the far right and “oh by the way”. And when they do report something progressive, like gay minister or gay/lesbian couple marrying you can almost hear the disgust in their voices. And what’s astonishing about that is MN has a very prominent place for gays and lesbians in our vibrant community. The man told me it was for his personal use but in speaking to a friend who takes down barns he informed me that there were several barn deconstructers who were selling large quantities of barn materials to the Chinese. Impact on me? Cost of materials is edging up and supply is far less than it was six months ago. So they wanted one of my pieces, and probably others work, probably intent on taking them apart or at least to have a template. When I consider how much they pay for the materials, shipping, fabricating and then shipping completed pieces back to the states you know they have to be paying virtually nothing for labor. I can’t compete with that and I don’t know if they’ll be successful but the immediate impact to me back here is less profit today and the risk of seeing my pieces copied and then put out at prices here below mine. I don’t charge a lot for my work but I can feel the squeeze already. I think that’s why I’m such a focused person on buying locally or at worst nationally. No trolls, hateful remarks, disgusting comments about the people in the article and then the commenters who call them out. Longer posts, actual words instead of code. You can swear, although not at each other. Much more reason and in depth thoughts. One liners welcome but not required 🙂 Mostly its about the freedom to express yourself. The biggest problem? Keeping up with the posts but there are some good cues, you can see where the most recent posts are, you can see what the most visited one are and if you want someone specific there’s a member directory. We are all one and the same here. I am not about to name call you as some shill of some brainwashing by some agency. I really don’t care how you got to where you are, but I am interested to know how you express your views. I would love to have a conversation about how you came to believe the MSM is led by liberals. I am really curious to have a decent conversation with someone about it because I have thought for years, when I lived in MD in the early 1990’s that the idea of a liberal leaning media was a myth propagated by the conservative leaning corporate owners of the media so they could use it to manipulate what gets fed to the masses. See, there I go. I also sense the frustration many people have with the late night comedy writers – I assume you are mostly pointing your finger at Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. I once again would enjoy a discussion on them. Other late night comics I’ve found to be a little of both. One more conservative, the other more liberal. I think most of the posts before me have fairly clearly stated both the diversity of thought here as well as the commitment we all have to open dialog. I think the reason I came here from HP was simple. I was tired and weary from fighting all the time, most of it from right leaning people and some from a more liberal or left leaning stance than me. I can’s speak for anyone but myself. I can come here, read, digest and agree, disagree or be neutral about many topics and posts. I have been disappointed in the President many times. I have ranted and screamed and in the end I have come to understand that the President really has a limited amount of power. He is the leader of the nation but he does not make law and unlike previous governments here there is a decidedly hostile attitude toward him I think no other President has ever faced. Call it race or call it that the left had a field day with W and they are getting payback. It really doesn’t matter. It’s more about what we can do. The President has made some gains but the entrenched hostility in the House and Senate has made forwarding any progressive agenda much harder than it should have been. For some reason the right seems to feel that the humans here in this country who are citizens are less important to them than the 2% of the super wealthy and the corporations. Short of a revolution like Egypt that change is going to take time. We cannot undo thirty years of drifting toward the right in two years. Nor can we ignore that there are a lot of people apparently comfortable with the status quo, or at least what they think it is. I would urge you to stick around, or at least stop by from time to time. As I’ve read here many times, there is no either/or. You can post several places and in fact talk about it without fear of being moderated or even banned. I only ask you respect my feelings and express your discomfort with them respectfully as I intend and practicing doing the same.
