I don’t know what it is about motorists, redneck or not, and their dislike of bicyclists. Our veterinarian, who we’ve known for well over 20 years, was an avid cyclist and he competed in marathons all over the country and the world. He told us harrowing stories – people flicking lit cigarettes out their windows at him, throwing cans and bottles and trying to run him off the road, even when he biked in groups, and jackasses that actually leaned out windows or from bed of pickups and physically pushed at him, making him fall. My husband and I ride bicycles regularly, and we are nowhere in the same league as our vet or the guy in the blog, but I always worry about crap like this when we’re out, too. Why in Dog’s name are people so freaking rude, beyond rude, nowadays? You know that I have sweaters that are 16 years old, and still look good? It’s because in Arizona, on the lower desert floor that our winter clothes last forever, because we only get to wear them maybe 6 weeks out of every year? This is an unusual winter, but we should get one more major cold snap whereby we’ll go below freezing in March, and that will only be for a day or two. And then we’ll heat up and it’ll go to 100 degrees, but during the months of April, May and June, it is normally the ‘dry heat’ and then in July, August and September, we’ll be 110+ with humidity. You’ve never experienced heat until it’s 117+ and even 122 degrees, and it’s so hot that it burns your fingers opening your car door, or grabbing onto your steering wheel.
