This is good news for Americans, bad news for the GOP. While Americans are still de-leveraging from the debt high in 2007, the Fed estimates that individual debt obligations have fallen from that high to the lowest share of after tax income since 1993. This means that consumers are still paying off debt, but with less debt to pay off, more money is now available to spend again. America in the form of diesel. I think some of the heartburn on this topic is the thought that we are taking risks with our environment to ship fuel to other countries rather than for ourselves. If you want to compare and contrast this movement with the civil rights movements of the late 50’s and 60’s there are a few key differences. 1)Appalling acts of violence by Southern police 2)Television as a new novelty 3)Limited time on television to show news, violence against its own citizens certainly was a compelling story 4)MLK The greatest strength and weakness of the movement is the lack of of a compelling spokesman to give shape and context to the movement itself. While I think this is smart, the downside is that if you can’t spoon-feed the media, they lose interest. At some point it is my belief that this spokesperson will emerge organically from the movement.
