And harder to answer than I thought it would be. I’m trying to stay away from impressions, opinions, and fluffy things like: “He needs to be tougher on the GOP” kind of thing. If I can pick one thing, it might be to run his entire second term like he’s run the last two months of this one. The vast majority of Americans are very supportive of policies addressing Global Warming 60-85% of ALL Americans share a common view on these issues, among ALL political stripes, ages, and persuasions. Congress may or may not propose or pass or filibuster meaningful laws around these issues, but the President can certainly publicly support and apply national popular pressure to move some of these issues on to the table. While my own personal opinion is that he traded sweeping social change while leaving the economy to more of the same is part opinion, part observation, I think there are some things he could have done differently. 1. Heavy dependence on drone strikes and drone strikes on American citizens 2. Heavily staffing his administration with warmed over retreads from prior administrations and corporatists 3. Tilting at the windmill of bipartisanship for far too long. I think it cost him precious time and resources 4. He seems to be a free trader in the Clinton mold. 5. My impression is that he tries to do too much alone, but that again is opinion. There are other criticisms I have, but some I think may have more to do with his staff / and / or Congress than his own personal weaknesses. He has an implacable enemy, and the fact that he’s accomplished what he has is pretty remarkable. The fact that he isn’t a liberal is not as important to me as I once thought, because he comparatively is the only game in town this election.
