Happy T-day to all of you in advance. I am getting on a plane 🙄 tomorrow and going down to spend it with the in-laws.

First time in 18 years I’ve done this. Why now? Not sure. Guess it was time to take one for the team.

KQ, great reply. And you couldn’t be more right. My response to people that parrot the “pass higher taxes on to the consumer” line is to ask them: “So when taxes go down, are those savings passed on the consumer? Can you give me an example of when that occurred?”

The corporate tax holiday is another golden oldie that gets trotted out every once in awhile. “Let corporations bring their untaxed profits back into the US at 0 or 5% and let them put it to work for the economy.”

Right. We tried that in 2003 if I’m not mistaken, and corporations used that money to buy back their own stock. Why? So they could pay their officers more. Income up to 1 million is treated as a deduction for the business. Past that and its not. So pay the CEO in stock and/or options and presto! Another big loophole exploited. One of the reasons Steve Jobs was worth 8.3 billion even though he took very little, if any salary.

That was the last year that corporate income taxes outpaced individual income tax collections as a % of the total federal receipts.

Now you may be saying, “Well of course we collect more taxes from individuals than corporations.”

But lets look at the trends:

1950:

Income Tax: 39%
Corporate Tax: 26%
Payroll Tax: 16%
Exicise Tax: 22%

1960:

Income Tax: 44%
Corporate Tax: 23%
Payroll Tax: 20%
Excise Tax: 17%

1970:

Income Tax: 47%
Corporate Tax: 17%
Payroll Tax: 29%
Excise Tax: 13%

1980:

Income Tax: 47%
Corporate Tax: 13%
Payroll Tax: 30%
Excise Tax: 9%

1990:

Income Tax: 45%
Corporate Tax: 9%
Payroll Tax: 36%
Excise Tax: 9%

2000:

Income Tax: 46%
Corporate Tax: 10%
Payroll Tax: 36%
Excise Tax: 8%

2010:

Income Tax: 40%
Corporate Tax: 9%
Payroll Tax: 40%
Excise Tax: 10%

This strikes me as a pretty regressive tax trend. Don’t you think?

Republicans on the supercommittee have made a new offer that would reduce deficits by $640 billion over the next decade, according to news reports (here and here). The Republican offer consists of roughly $542 billion in spending cuts and $3 billion in revenues, meaning the ratio of spending cuts to revenue increases in the plan is 181 to 1. These measures would also produce nearly $100 billion in debt-service savings. Democrats promptly rejected the new Republican offer as unbalanced.

Super-Committee Wrestles with EXTREMELY COMPLEX ISSUES!!!

Here’s how complicated it is:

2010 Deficit = $1.2 Trillion

Discretionary Military Spending
2000 = $496 billion 2010 = $860 billion

Total Revenues
2000 = $2.7 Trillion 2010 = $2.2 Trillion

That’s about a $1 Trillion dollar total gap.

How will they ever solve such a complicated issue? GodSpeed SuperCommittee.

Dear Herman,

It’s me again, your biggest fan. I hope this letter finds you well during your difficult times. Life hasn’t been easy for me since Sarah decided not to run for President. I know she had a higher calling to attend to, but purpose has been hard to come by….until I saw you.

I still remember it clear as day. I was watching you on Neil Cavuto talking about how you wouldn’t appoint any Muslims to government postiions unless you were super-sure that they wouldn’t sneak any Sharia law into our government. That made sense to me.

Then when you came out with 9-9-9 I was hooked. Who knew that you could make solving complicated problems so simple? You did, that’s who. Once mighty Sarah recused herself from running, I knew you were my guy.

I’ve been following you across the country, from bookstore to half-price bookstore. I’ve been at all of your signings, maybe you’ve seen me? I’m the one in the “Cain Train” t-shirt. I waved to you in Topeka, but I guess you didn’t see me.

Times are kind of tough right now, and with no job I’ve been challenged. Thankfully my unemployment and disability check keep just enough gas in the van to keep following you around the country as you fight to keep government off of our backs!!! Freedom isn’t free is it?

And one more thing…I don’t believe for a minute the stories these awful women have cooked up against you. First, you would never do such a thing. Second, if you did, what woman could refuse you?

World Bank releases “Doing Business 2012: Doing Business in a More Transparent World”

It’s pretty wonky, but the interesting thing about this report is the overall findings. Each country in the world is assessed a “ease of doing business” rating based up 2-3 dozen different criteria that include:

1) How easy is it to get a business license?
2) How easy is it to get electricity to the business
3) How easy is it to handle the tax code of that country etc etc

The overall finding? The top 4 “Easiest to do Business” countries in the world?

1. Singapore
2. Hong Kong
3. New Zealand (who knew?)
4. The United States

A couple of thoughts came to mind when I read this: First, I thought that the tax code, regulation, and “uncertainty” was CRUSHING business in this country? Guess that is more conventional GOP/Bullshit wisdom. Second, is there a DOWNSIDE to it being this easy?

The executive summary on the portal page shows the rankings of all the countries.
