Unless Landrieu or Pryor or Nunn can pull a rabbit out of their hat, the GOP will take nominal control over the Senate. I knew this would be a very very challenging election for the Democrats. The wave elections of 2006 and 2008 were bound to be difficult to defend. The good news is that is 2016 the GOP has to defend 23 seats in a Presidential election year, with Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire to be especially difficult to defend. The Democrats have only 9 seats up for defense, with only Nevada an uncertain seat (whether Reid runs again or not, which I don’t think he will) Root hard for the Blue Dogs listed above, the closer the Dems can keep it the less likely conservative Dem Senators will feel pressure to compromise with the GOP on bills that come through the House or back to the Senate with a fresh Presidential veto. Unlike the GOP, the Democratic Senate contains many moderates and some conservatives and that pressure will mount if the GOP takes every close race tomorrow night. More than likely we end up with 51 GOP Senators, 3 Independents (2 which caucus with the Dems and 1 that caucuses with the GOP) and 46 Dem Senators. If so, then at worst we are looking at another 2 years of total paralysis. It will be hard to peel off 8 Dem Senators to override a Presidential veto of odious legislation.
