Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

OK, I’m not a good researcher, never was but, does anyone know what the link is for two highly ranked military staff (I think joint chiefs, part of Gates’ staff )recommendations for the USA staying competitive? It was about education, infrastructure, etc., and how focusing on security would bankrupt us.

“I swear, I thought he was a toad!” Orneriness has made him just plain stupid. (Lifted from “Brother Where Art Thou.) Sometime a guy just needs to be quiet and lay low. As a smart 16 year old once said to a group of adults, “Sometimes you have to do a bunch of things right before you can do something wrong and get away with it.” He was actually talking about getting along as a new kid in HS and it wasn’t right and wrong, but rather doing what was expected so he could be himself.

I think Palin, who has been described as vindictive, is angry at the GOP and Ailes and is doing this to make a point. She will force the non tea party candidates into some very uncomfortable positions and this serves as a direct challenge to Bachmann, all of which should be a hoot. Pretty smart actually.

Khirad, I’ve long thought that Bush HW should be forced to watch “Road to Perdition” with his eyes pinned open as in “Clockwork Orange” as punishment for his son’s power to do anything.

jkkFL, this is too sad. Our highs are lower and our lows are lower still in this declining chart of American values. Values is a corrupt word due to all the political pandering, but I don’t have a word to describe the feeling in my stomach. This, with cutting Medicare, cutting schools spending, Christy saying out loud that he would not respect the Supreme Court’s decision if it went against him, everyday lying with impunity, are lows that just scare me. ;-(

KQuark; now I understand what “ditto heads” means. I used to think it meant to think the same. However, “Cogito ergo sum” –I think, therefore I am, would indicate that they do not think for themselves. This means that they are little Rushes–or whomever–rather than individual thinkers. True ditto heads. (not a strong argument but fun)

PW, hi! And I did enjoy! I’ve had a lot of cats and they are so much fun. I don’t know how we humans became so cautious compared to them. Your new place is beautiful. We still enjoy canoe-camping on the Namekagon River near Trego. And those are bear traps Maggie’s perusing, right? Cats. No sense of proportion. 😉

I know bito, this is a heart breaker. Alabama I don’t think is being held “hostage” so this stunt is probably for the marketing efforts to pinch the Democrats–entitlements to lazy people or support to tornado victims. To think in such a convoluted way leaves me too furious to comment reasonably. It is hurtful.

PatsyT, I know; there’s something about dogs. Three dogs, two cats and a turtle in a small house = a near foodchain. Our Cat ruled He didn’t intimidate the dogs–they didn’t really care, but truly, they could have killed him and he was oblivious to that fact. He would just swat at them at they walked by thinking he had just fixed the world a little bit.

Size does not matter to animals.

Bito: I agree with you completely. But, there are some who define (forgive me) education as “elitist”; as a condemnation of sorts. I came here as the 3 year old of a woman sponsored as a live in domestic in a wealthy north Chicago suburb. My schools were great. The community my husband and I raised our children in is bvery strong in education=–it IS why everyone is here. Not the mansions, but the schools; small house, large house–all one. Our taxes are substantial and 75% go to k-8. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I do-resent isn’t the right word–the putting down of college, of “nerdiness” or any term that defines thinking in or out of the box. It’s what saved me from being a white ghetto kid.

I’ve had the forutne of wonderful teachers–a few, eh. But they can light a world with possibilities

We took a Mandarin course and our young instructor said, “In China, if the children don’t learn, it’s their fault. In the United States, if the children don’t learn, it’s the teacher’s fault.” It’s so complex. I could have been on either side.

Their happiness at not knowing the answers is telling in itself. Part of our culture has legitimized not caring about not knowing. They must have a model that everything will still be fun and OK.

No fear of failure, no thought of the future. I shouldn’t assume their feelings but the “innocence” is frightening to me. This isn’t “screw it” but “so what?”
