Cher, I totally agree that was a lack of rules and regulations. The few that were in the bill that the house passed were written out in the conference.

I just watched the finacial regulation bill vote in the House. Not one Republican voted for the bill!
“We don’t need no stinking regulations.”

Cher, I disagree that the TARP fund wasn’t needed at the time it was passed. Did the banks deserve it? No. Did they the major cause of the meltdown? Yes. Did the Bush administration do their usual work of not having enough regulations in the bill? Yes.

Remember, this was a world wide meltdown of the financial institutions and the U.S. is a leader of banking. The U.K. still owns pieces of many of their banks. In the case of the Bank of Scotland, they own 70% of it.

Did Bush et al, ignore and help with the crash with more deregulation and lax regulation? Yes!

My conclusion is the TARP was needed and Obama is trying to use the unspent $200 billion on helping “Main Street”. The economy is not out of the woods yet. IMHO, we are in the middle of the forest.

Friday Music Thread – Your Early Faves

jezzapezza Hope, that is a sad story. Problem is I can relate to it quite well. Too well. Medical problems can ruin one’s life. Though many services are stretched $$ right now, I do hope that you have reached out to them. We have an organization in Tucson, (ICS- Interfaith Community Services) if they can’t help directly, they will give you contacts for jobs, shelter, food….. I do hope you reach out! Don’t be too proud. When you are healed and on your feet, they will appreciate your volunteer help.

Has anyone heard or heard of the group that sings in the new movie “Invictus”? Their name is the “Overtones.” They are from South Afica and sing a Capella.They do some stuff that reminds me of old street singers doing “doo- whop.” Heard them on KGO radio out of San Fran a couple weeks ago.

The Mind of the Politician

C’Lady, I started in grade school working in civic activities. My parents were active in Union, political and charity WORK. I learned at an early age it takes work. Campaigns are fun! When you win it is work!
the frustrations are always there at every corner you turn. “I want this.” “No, do that.” “You’re not doing….”

Short story: I was working on a workers comp. bill in the state leg. They were try to do some real damage to an all ready bad law. I went to my home local, told them the skinny and told them that I needed to have letters sent to their Sate Reps & Senators. Everyone was rah! rah! After the meeting, 2/3’s did not know what district they were in or who to write!
I was supposed to be up to “The Capital” and empty handed? I was going to fight this bill with out ammunition? It can get frustrating. (and I loved it! ~smile~)

C’Lady, You really are a Choice Lady. So many good points you made and I appreciate them immensely because you are out in the trenches–fighting the good fight.
One of the lines in Obama’s acceptance speech reminded me of something similar to FDR’s technique.
Obama said, to a big applause, change does does not come FROM Washington, Change comes TO Washington. I need your help.
FDR wold say about some of his proposals, if he felt he didn’t have enough support from the voters, they will have to make me do it. He knew he had support, he wanted MORE support.
some voters seem to live in a world where each problem should be fixed by the end of the hour long episode. Hell, The senate can go in an hour long quorum call. Progress is incremental, the step at a time thing. Radicalism can have many unwanted effects difficult to fix. Progress is not accomplished with some banana republic coup.

nellie, On the first story listed about Congress creating oversite boards and SCOTUS. On first read, I tended to the “shouldn’t be allowed side.”
Just for fun I ran a search on our newly found site “sourcewatch” and typed in the plaintiff: Free enterprise Fund. Oddly, the “fund” grew out of people that were in “The Club for Growth.” The names associated with the group (that I recognized)were all names one would read about GOP backers.
Now I don’t know which way this case should go.~grin~

I was surprised that the settlement of the tribal lands case got so little notice. I have been following this story, of and on, for years. After 13 years and multiple trials and appeals with costs ranging up to $100 billion, this is great news.
The settlement still has to go through Congress. On what grounds will the GOP fight this case?
