Romney won 8 out of 10 states with the lowest population, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Nebraska and Utah. Obama won New Mexico and Nevada.
The total population of those 8 states equals less than 10 million, approx 9.9. All 8 have less people than the “swing state” Ohio, New york has twice the population and California around 3.7. And they’re all packed in those 8 states at less than 20 per sq. mile, the average for the country is 87.4.
