There are proposals allowing them to repatriate at rates as low as 5.xx% and I say let them bargain down to that rate if they wish. They could bargain down to 0.00% for all I care but it would be a 2 to 1 trade-off. I’m a nice guy and they would get the 1.5-2% return on their investment into the Infrastructure Bank (or whatever Treasury Bills are selling at.) I want to put the onus on them to make the choice, not expect a windfall. A paid for jobs program with a choice, participate or not. People have a “once bitten, twice shy” reaction to the President’s latest stimulus. They don’t believe it will substantially improve the economy; in fact, they view the plan as a “Band-Aid” that won’t fix the deeper problems our country faces. However, given Obama’s unrelenting, taxpayer-subsidized promotion of his agenda, policymakers who favor pro-growth solutions will need to prosecute the following points in a sustained, disciplined, detailed manner:
1. Emphasize the bipartisan opposition to Obama’s big-spending plans
2. Compare Obama’s failed Stimulus I with Stimulus II, provision by provision
a. compare the promises Obama made about Stimulus I with the claims he is now making about how Stimulus II will perform
b. remind Americans how the first $830 billion of stimulus funds were spent
c. review how the U.S. economy and employment levels responded
3. highlight the larger problems our country faces and point out that Obama’s stimulus is not a serious solution, but rather a “Band Aid” that fails to fix these problems
The battle for America’s desperately needed economic and fiscal recovery can only be won by taking the high ground – and that starts with defining and defeating Obama’s latest big-government plan.
Already it is having some effect because the R’s are complaining “He’s not being ‘Presidential'” and Karl Rove’s polling says it “working”.
