But it didn’t. As I was waiting for my bags at the airport, I heard a mid-thirties woman talking on the phone. “Yeah, I’m down in New Orleans for the American Legislative Exchange Council meeting. We write legislation, and they pass our ideas. It’s the free market.” At a workshop I attended, one Texas legislator, who moderated the forum, went as far as to say that we are a big football team. The legislators are the football players and the corporate lobbyists and special interest group presenters are “our” coaches. Half of the organization is made up of legislators, mostly conservative Republicans. There is a smattering of conservative Democrats, a handful of people of color, and, well, me. The other half is comprised of corporate special interests. They pay big bucks to put their logos, lobbyists, and legislation in front of the objects of their affection: state legislators. Now if the R’s come to their senses and pass the bill extending the payroll tax cuts and the the UI extension, if not, that could really slow our ‘sluggish’ recovery of employment. Seeing what they have been up to since PBO’s election though, they seem to not care about 60,000 jobs, but just two jobs, theirs and the Presidents. The Center for Auto Research said there will be 60,000 new auto jobs added next year, and 190,000 jobs added between now and 2015. Most of those jobs will be with auto suppliers. Employment for the “Detroit Three” automakers of Ford, GM and Chrysler is becoming more consolidated here in Michigan. “Right now 60 percent of all Detroit Three employment in the United States is in Michigan. Yes they have higher taxes there and the corporate tax is lower without any loopholes, but the penalties for corporations cheating on their taxes is quite severe.
Part of their well kept ‘number’ included universal health care, universal education,paid vacations and paid maternity leave, free child care, free retraining/school if one is unemployed along with job placement…… the list goes on. Care to look up their gini and see what their income inequality is?
