As did Greenspan. But what happens when corporatism takes hold and buys or controls the 20-200 individual companies? I know that is quite simplified but we have been living in an unfettered era of unregulated (or not enforcing existing laws) on corporations. A couple of simple examples. When Stanley Tools attempted to off-shore their profits, thus avoiding their taxes, the workers and stockholders rebelled citing that the taxes need to be paid to help the state and country as a whole. For you to say “we should have put them to rest long, long ago,” is the same reasoning that the corporations say, “Let us have our way, it’s solved.” Could we have stopped at Taft, or could we have stopped at Hoover? Life/society is not stagnant. There is a party right now with formidable forces behind them attempting to completely dismantle the social safety net established in the 30’s, 50’s and 60’s, should, can, this and next generations just ignore that or do they need to act?
My Great Grand Father had a scared dent in his head fighting for workers rights from the a rifle butt, should I have quit fighting for them because they won so many years ago?
I do find your “woulda”, shouldas”, “couldas” not so much as as an excuse but as an acceptance.
The forces behind reversing progress are constant and the struggle is constant. There are elected representatives calling for the repeal of child labor laws, does that give you confidence that the struggle is settled? Not me.
The mantle is passed to the next generation, accept it or not that is your set of “woulda”, shoulda”, “couldas,”
A person does not become a legend when he stops at his first accomplishment and neither does society advance with it’s first.
If the generation of serfs or slaves looked back, what then?
With each generation the mantle of responsibility needs to be accepted for better or worse. Your choice.

Had Andrew Carnegie not married the much younger woman, with a social conscience, he would have gone down as one of all time SOB’s in history. Most of his endowments and pension funds were because of her.
Again a simple example: the locally owned bank/Credit Union support the local ball team or is it Goldman-Sachs.
I know that this is off my “Corporatism is killing Capitalism” but Wal-Mart is such a clear example and and close to many people.
Sue and I went through the banks the other day. My local bank went to NCNB to Bank of America and the taxpayers bailed them out. Would my local bank ever needed a bailout? Would they received it, no, they would have gone into receivership by the FDIC, a system that corporate banks are immune from under law. (Dood-Frank has a system in it, but it is being fought tooth and nail by them.)
As KQ said the lefts version of “Kill the Fed” and save the whale thrown in.
Capitalism is but a system, a tool, neither good nor evil but left unregulated it will soon turn to greed and corporatism.
Is there “a system” that can’t be corrupted?
In the perfect (Adam Smith) world, if 20-200 tool/hardware companies are competing against each other, they will produce the best product and the lowest prices for sale to their customers. History has shown that “that dog won’t hunt” with out society placing some regulations on the system.
And when you have those 20-200 companies, they have to compete for the best workers, giving the workers some leverage on their wages and benefits. Again competition.
The fight for controlling corporations/cartels has been long and storied.
The era of Taft, T.R., Wilson and their trust busting to go again though an era of corporate free-for-alls.
Another example is Wal-Mart grocery stores, they are putting smaller grocery stores out of business and lowering wages. Because the can!
