Republican Governor of Florida Rick Scott cut the education budget for public schools while promoting vouchers for private schools. Meanwhile some private high schools which are minimally regulated are churning out fake degrees in FL.

I was working at a Washington DC hotel a few years back where a CPAC conference was going on. One of the books they were hawking was “Painting the Map Red”, by Hugh Hewitt. I read just a few paragraphs and was appalled.

Tim Pawlenty was governor of Minnesota for two terms, and left his office with a $2 Billion state debt. So much for fiscal responsibility.

He came out with the asinine “throw a 9-iron through the windows of gov’t” speech – while still occupying the Governor’s Mansion. Wonder how he would have felt if we’d have showed up at his Summit Ave residence with golf clubs in hand?

At some point, years ago, he seemed to be a responsible, thinking adult. That time is long past; Mr. Pawlenty is merely another GOP rubber stamp, a cipher (The mathematical symbol ‘0’ denoting absence of quantity; zero.)

But it is – curious – that the NYT and everybody else took so long to voice their opinions this forcefully. Why didn’t they do this during the 2000 election, when it could have made a big difference?

That’s right. It’s part of the authoritarian mind set. They give up their individualiity to join the greater group. “It’s a choice.”

The Italian name of this movement, fascismo, is derived from fascio, “bundle, (political) group,” but also refers to the movement’s emblem, the fasces, a bundle of rods bound around a projecting axe-head that was carried before an ancient Roman magistrate by an attendant as a symbol of authority and power.

Of course, there’s another term for a bundle of sticks, that is not so self-congratulatory. Also starting with an ‘f’. Its pejorative connotations date from the Middle Ages, when homosexual men could only find work collecting sticks.

Rep. Boehner just does what he’s told – he’s a rubber stamp, along with the rest of the GOP. Fox made a big deal of Reagan’s “11th Commandment” the other day (do not break rank), while crucifying the adulterer Newt for speaking his mind on the Ryan bill.

Who would dare to speak out against Roger Ailes or Rush? They will be punished!

My favorite Pawlenty-ism is when he advocated “tossing a 9-iron through the windows of government”. At the time, he’d been governor of Minnesota for two terms. I wonder what the State Troopers thought of the prospects of somebody taking him up on that, at the Governor’s mansion in St. Paul?
