The Senate does not have to vote to remove a convicted president from office. The actual words of the Constitution does that. The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. Remember that before the Seventeenth Amendment, members of the Senate were appointed by the state legislatures and not elected, so as to make them non-political. Further, before the impeachment trial begins, senators have to take an oath to do impartial justice. If they instead conspire with the president and his/her advisors to not consider evidence and not to allow witnesses, don’t they become part of the cover-up that the president is committing? House Managers have in fact accused them of participating in a cover-up. The rule of law dictates that we don’t prosecute our political opponents for making political decisions, but although impeachment is a political process, it is intended to be litigated without considering politics. Further, I am not convinced that the framers of the Constitution made the chief justice of the Supreme Court the president of the Senate during an impeachment trial, just for decoration. It seems to be common sense that as the designated presider of the trial, he/she would rule on the appropriateness of witnesses and evidence. Quite frankly, the first time I heard that slogan I actually heard “make America white again”. Trump is a reflection of a large segment of white Americans who are scared shitless about the changing demographics of the USA. They are not the majority of Americans, but coupled with the electoral college they represented the majority of voters in 2016. Our challenge is to get all eligible voters who don’t share the worldview of republicans, to vote in 2020. If we are successful, we can take the country back and probably put the GOP in a position where they will never recover. The single biggest threat to Republicans’ long-term viability is demographics. The big picture: The numbers simply do not lie. America, as a whole, and swing states, in particular, are growing more diverse, more quickly. There is no way Republicans can change birth rates or curb this trend — and there’s not a single demographic megatrend that favors Republicans. Why it matters: President Trump’s short-term calculation to stir up white voters with race-baiting rhetoric might very well echo for a generation. Some republicans who are ashamed of trump and the current republican party, attempt to promote trump as a lifelong Democrat, because he donated to some Democratic politicians in the past. I suspect trump also donated to republican politicians who he thought he needed in order to get away with his crimes over the years. Trump actually doesn’t care about Democrats OR republicans. He only cares about trump. He knew he couldn’t persuade Democratic voters to support him, so he chose to pull his con on republican voters.
