There is STILL a Southern Baptist Convention and a National Baptist Convention. When I grew up in East Texas during Jim Crow, we had the Future Farmers of America (FFA) for white youth in rural communities, and we had the New or Negro Farmers of America (NFA) for black youth. After schools in the south were integrated, the NFA was discontinued and it combined with the FFA. Not so with the Baptist church. The positive sentiments that white Christians express about Trump and their growing sense that their side has been winning politically largely reflect their political partisanship. In the current survey, 83% of white evangelicals identify with or lean toward the Republican Party, as do 64% of white Protestants who are not evangelical and 65% of white Catholics. The majority of protestors for the murder of George Floyd are white. Some of them might even be white evangelicals. The bodycam of one of the arresting officers reveals the suspect saying, “I can’t breathe”. The death was ruled a homicide, but none of the officers have been charged with a homicide, and the sheriff department says the officers complied with protocol in conducting the arrest. What does defunding police departments look like? In the George Floyd case the police was called because Floyd was suspected by a store clerk to have attempted to pass a counterfeit twenty dollar bill. If the store clerk was correct in his assumption, what is the worst penalty for attempting to pass a counterfeit twenty dollar bill? In the Javier Ambler case in Austin, Texas, the offense that caused the officers to pursue apprehending Mr. Ambler was that he failed to dim his car headlights when he passed a deputy. Again, what is the worst penalty for failing to dim a car’s headlights? The point is that MAYBE as a society we are asking policemen to do things that they should not be doing. In both of these cases, and there are at least thousands just like them, the suspect died. For what? Attempting to pass a counterfeit twenty dollar bill? Failing to dim a car’s headlights? What IF the officers had simply gotten the information to issue a fine to these two men, or given them the opportunity to arrange a court hearing to defend themselves? Was an arrest or even an apprehension even necessary in either case? “Defunding” police departments is not eliminating police departments. It is refocusing what we ask policemen to do. Someone said that we might stop referring to them as police officers and begin referring to them as peace officers. IF we had peace officers instead of police officers, COULD we have a safer society with fewer unnecessary dead suspects? Yes, some people will need to be apprehended.
