One thing I should mention is that home schooling does not really have the evaluation by school leaders that it should have. Parents are not forced to report back in and some states never bother to follow up. I read an article this past week written by a college professor on the terrible state of young minds entering college these days and I think if a study was done you would find most are either home-schooled or in a district of bad quality. » Posted By SueInCa On March 25, 2012 @ 4:12 pm Kalima If you send your child to a religious school, Catholic, Hebrew, Christian then I would also expect they would receive some religious training. My kids went to Christian schools until 4th grade and it did not hurt them. My grandson has attended one since kindergarten and he is also doing fine. The most they have is chapel once a week and to learn a bible verse. If I put my kid in that environment then that is fine if I choose a secular school then that is what I expect from that experience. I expect my grandson will soon be asking to go to public school just like my kids did. I worked full time when my youngest turned 4 so to have a daycare attached to the school was a bonus for us. I delivered in the morning and the hubby picked up after work. We always knew where our kids were and that they were not in trouble. LDS was also a big backer along with Knights of Columbus in funding Prop 8 in CA. They also have Mitt under the White Horse Prophecy so there is good reason not to vote for hm either not counting all the other reasons. My daughter graduated from college in 1996 so I have not had kids in school for a long time. We pay for private school for our grandson so we pretty much know what is going on there. Good for you and your husband standing on your own principles. If these people had a genuine reason besides turning the world for Jesus they would admire your principled method of work. The RR does not necessarily need to be in the WH to attack the public school system. They work it mostly at the local level with coordination at their own national level. They have their own defense league and they have their own think tanks to churn out studies that favor their beliefs and sometimes even create their own stats. The only thing I would add is to put Gingrich in the same equation as Santorum. His buddies are dominionists and rightwing religious fanatics. He hinted at Palin in a seat of power which makes him no better than McCain. He is best friends with David Barton the history reconstructionist. Catholic means radical christian to him. I would bet if you wiki’d the people closest to him I have not mentioned you would find more dominionists. Of course I do not believe he has a snowball’s chance in hell of winning but he could use delegates as the spoiler between S and M and I am not talking about sex. I am not sure where this country went down the rabbit hole but we did. We had some bright shining moments(years) in our history but it really has been filled with a constant fight to either maintain upward mobility, get upward mobility or stare at it from afar. There has never been a truly tranquil period in our history. Some were better than others but never tranquil or without wars(of some type), fraud and deceit. I sound like a pessimist but maybe that is why we strive for winning at any cost. It allows us to live in that perfect bubble even if only for a short while. I wish people were more idealistic and for certain we have many but try this one equation. Tell a group of mixed educational levels that you never felt the need to go to college. Out of 15 with 5 highly educated 5 highly intelligent but no formal university and 5 who never went to college what do you think the reaction of each group would be, knowing you do not know their own status? My bet is at least 10 would try to change your mind or try to make you feel small because you do not have the “obvious” benefit of a formal collage education when, in fact, college cannot improve your knowledge, your own pursuit of knowledge makes the difference. However because of our innate teaching most of us would think what a shame you did not go or don’t you know you have to have that formal education to be succesful? First of all I hope you are ok. I saw the mention of the quake this morning as we were leaving home. We have had three or four smaller ones here in the past few weeks. They spooked me so I cannot imagine how spooked you all are. Our last one was Loma Prieta in 89 so I bet we are due soon. When we lived in No CA there were no earthquakes in our area.
I saw your responses on Africa and I am pleased to know the Pope has changed his stance on condoms. The only thing I would say further is I hope he announced it to the country like he did when he advised them not to use them. I swear I don’t have a grudge against the Catholic church it just makes me mad when someone does something so criminally wrong that could sentence people to a needless horrible disease and sure death.
