To get a gun in Japan, first, you have to attend an all-day class and pass a written test, which are held only once per month. You also must take and pass a shooting range class. OBAMACARE HAS SAVED SENIORS $4 BILLION ON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS | The Centers for Medicare And Medicaid Services (CMS) released data showing that over 5.2 million seniors and people with disabilities have already saved nearly $4 billion on prescription drugs as a direct result of the Affordable Care Act. The CMS data also showed that over 1 million people with Medicare saved an average of $629 on prescriptions in the “donut hole” coverage gap since the beginning of the year. So far in 2012, Medicare coverage for generic drugs in the coverage gap has risen to 14 percent, saving Medicare beneficiaries a total of $687 million. Over the next few years, the government will cover more and more of brand-name and generic drugs until donut hole is closed in 2020.

But, like the New Hampshire business owner showcased in Romney’s attack ad on the issue, many of these business owners have received significant support from the government, a ThinkProgress analysis finds:
Midwest Tapes, a media distributor of Holland, Ohio, was showcased at a local event and received stimulus funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Midwest Tapes has been contracted by the Department of Defense since 2008, earning a cumulative $13,659.
Columbus Truck and Equipment was featured in a neighboring event and has received $6,643 in contracts with the Department of Defense.
Cranston Material Handling Equipment Corporation has reaped a total of $61,729 in contracts with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2007.
Systems Engineering Co.The owner of Systems Engineering has received a total of $180,200 in DOD contracts, as recently as last year.
Larson Group, which sent its owner to the local Romney event in Missouri, was awarded $3,845 in stimulus funds.
Brady Industries in Las Vegas has received $54,425 in contracts with Veterans Affairs since 2009.
Pennsylvania business PRL Industries Inc. received a $167,847 contract through the Department of Homeland Security for ship and boat propulsion components for the U.S. Coast Guard in August 2008.
An Iowa event featured Competitive Edge, Inc. which was contracted by Veterans Affairs for $3,543 to make informational refrigerator magnets.
J & W Cycles of Missouri was awarded $25,808 in contracts from the DOD and Department of Interior.
Total Resource, featured in a Sparks, Nevada campaign event, has been a federal contractor since 2010, and received a $11,200 contract from the DOD in 2009.
Applegate Insulation, which hosted one of the events in Michigan, benefited from an energy saving federal tax credit worth 30 percent of the installation project, up to $1,500.
Home Instead Senior Care supported Romney in Roanoke, Virginia, even though home health care companies receive 75 percent of their funding from public programs like Medicare and Medicaid. Home Instead franchises in Virginia have received at least $3,613,549 in federal funding through the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2008.
Ed Nagle of Nagle Trucking in Ohio also took issue with Obama’s speech, which mentioned roads and bridges as examples of essential government support. But less than a year ago, Nagle protested an idea to privatize the Ohio Turnpike, noting that the privatized Indiana toll road “has diminished in its quality and it’s become a lot more expensive.”
TOP ROMNEY FOREIGN POLICY AIDE REFERS TO RUSSIA AS ‘THE SOVIET UNION’ | Mitt Romney’s campaign often sounds like it still wants to fight the Cold War. Romney himself said that Russia is the U.S.’s “number one geopolitical foe” (a statement that even Colin Powell mocked) and back in April, a Romney adviser criticized President Obama’s “Czechoslovakia” policy. Today during a foreign policy debate at the Brookings Institution, senior Romney adviser Richard Williamson, attacking Obama’s Syria policy, said the Middle East country is “strategically important to the Soviet Union.” Watch the clip:
In fact, 24-year-old Holmes legally purchased every firearm, bullet, and piece of tactical gear that he used for the attack, according to local law enforcement. He bought most of it over the Internet. Mentally ill people are barred from purchasing firearms, but Holmes had no previous record of illness, and would not have been flagged in a background check.
Unfortunately, rather than addressing the inadequacies of the nation’s existing gun laws, Romney instead focused on “changing the heart of the American people” and successfully dodged the larger conversation about gun control.
This isn’t really a similar story but it came to mind when reading about your father getting to board the plane. My story is after 9/11 and my husband and I were taking his father’s ashes back to Colo to be spread over a section of a ranch he had managed years ago. We went through the scanners and a young inspector pulled us aside and told us we would have to open the container. My husband and I froze! We had never opened it. We just stood there. The young man said, “Is something wrong?” I said that we had never opened it before and that it had my husband’s father ashes in it. The young man froze! I told him he could open it if he needed to but it is sealed tightly. The young man remained frozen. Finally, he said that it had gone through the scanner and he didn’t think it would be necessary to open it. We were able to leave with dad’s ashes undisturbed. I know that young man didn’t want to open that container in anyway! Believe me, when we finally got to the ranch, that container was a real challenge to get open! And, the funeral home said that we had to destroy the container and not just throw it away because they get calls all the time about containers being found and someone thinking someone’s ashes might still be in them. Anyway, Dad is on the ranch!
And, as it turns out, Jack Gilchrist is no different. The New Hampshire Union Leader reports today that Gilchrist benefited from millions of dollars of government loans and contracts to get his business on its feet:
In 1999, Gilchrist Metal received $800,000 in tax-exempt revenue bonds issued by the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority “to set up a second manufacturing plant and purchase equipment to produce high definition television broadcasting equipment,” according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report at the time…
Last year, Gilchrist Metal also received two U.S. Navy sub-contracts totaling about $83,000 and a smaller $5,600 Coast Guard contract in 2008, according to a government web site that tracks spending.
He also took a U.S. Small Business Administration loan in the late 1980s totaling “somewhere south of” $500,000, plus matching funds from the federally-funded New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center.
In theory, this sounds like a compelling point. But despite the fact that guns are freely available everywhere in America, no one ever seems to have one handy when some psycho opens fire. Or the vigilantes fire and miss the shooter and hit other innocent people instead.
Another anti-gun-law argument that pops up occasionally is that we need the guns to protect ourselves from the government.
That might have been a reasonable argument back in 1791, when the government had a few muskets and Americans had a few muskets, so it was kind of a fair fight. But any Americans who think that having a semi-automatic weapon around the house these days is going to “protect” them from the combined might of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines have bigger things to worry about than the availability of guns. (Like their sanity.)
That country is Japan.
Guns are really, really hard to get in Japan.
As a result, not many people are killed with guns in Japan.

And as Fisher points out, 11 gun deaths made 2008 a bad gun-death year in Japan. In 2006, 2 people were killed with guns.
[I]n Egypt, the birthplace of the Brotherhood, the organization’s leaders were either perplexed by the accusations or simply hadn’t heard them. Nor had they heard of Huma Abedin.
