Murph, I will be interested in seeing Newt handle the others in debate now that they will be coming after him. I don’t know if he has much of a challenge, however. Maybe Mitt will get ugly with him and I do think Mitt has a hell of a temper. Or Ron Paul who has been around as long as Newt. And, I do think that Huntsman has nothing to lose, so, he could hit Newt with facts. I think Huntsman is the smartest of them all. If Bachmann trys and Newt responds hateful or rude towards her, that won’t look good for him. Anyway, it will be interesting to watch.

STUDY: Republicans Are Dog People, While Democrats Prefer Cats

Overwhelmingly, red states have the highest rate of dog ownership while residents of blue states are more likely to keep a cat as a pet.

The red states in question are Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma, while the lone blue (dog) state was New Mexico.
Nine of the ten states with the lowest percentage of households with a pet dog voted Democratic, including strongholds Minnesota, New York, and Rhode Island.
And in spite of the undeniable cuteness of Bo Obama, four out of the top five feline-friendly states voted for the President. Cats are the preferred pet in the blue states of Vermont, Maine, Oregon, and Washington, although South Dakotans also own plenty of felines.
This rule doesn’t appear to hold perfectly – in particular, there’s no rush to label Dianne Feinstein a DemoCAT. For instance, California (a blue bastion) also has one of the lowest rates of cat ownership, with 28.3 percent of households including a feline in their families.

Another surprising nugget from the study: in America, dogs aren’t a man’s best friend. While there are about 70 million pet dogs in the nation, there are 74.1 million pet cats.

Kalima, they error in their thinking that it is a fight with Obama alone. Maybe Congress won’t act but a Million Mothers March will show that it is a fight with many that believe there needs to be gun control! Everyday there is another shooting. It won’t stop until it is stopped! There are more and more people speaking up daily for change and control. They have a big fight on their hands but not with just the President’s.

I don’t think Romney demanded protection but that it is automatically provided for both parties candidates, once chosen by their party, running for president. (This includes the members of their immediate family) It will be provided for both in 2016 when neither will be a sitting President at the time of the election. That is why this advertisement by the NRA is so outlandish and totally out of line. They don’t even let the President of the United States drive a car while he is in office because of the danger of someone hitting him on purpose. (yes, there are other reasons but they all are for his protection) These little girls are the targets not only of our own nuts but those from other countries, as well. No parent including the President wants to have to have protection for their family and take away a free life and childhood from them because they are in fear of the dangers around them but that is how it has to be. Secret Service protections has been provided since the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901.

Funk, I said the day after this tragedy that I bet the conspiracy theorist where going to say the government did it in-order to take peoples guns away. Dah dah, here they are! It always confounds me that these people that think the government could and would go to all this trouble to stage something and could pull if off, well, couldn’t the government just say, “We are taking your guns” and save the time? But, these are the same people that think their home weapons will hold off the government and military weapons. I have never understood why these same people believe that the government took down the World Trade Center to get us into war. When in fact all Bush had to say was that there was weapons of mass destruction in the making in Iraq and we were off!

Bill Clinton Makes Surprise Appearance During Golden Globe Awards

Former president Bill Clinton made an appearance during Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards and gave an inspirational introduction to Steven Spielberg’s film “Lincoln.”

“A tough fight to push a bill through a bitterly divided Congress,” Clinton began before describing the difficulties Lincoln had passing the 13th amendment. “Winning it required the president to make a lot of unsavory deals that had nothing to do with the big issue. I wouldn’t know anything about that,” Clinton quipped to the delighted crowd.

“President Lincoln’s struggle to abolish slavery reminds us that enduring progress is forged in a cauldron of both principle and compromise,” Clinton continued. “This brilliant film shows us how he did it, and gives us hope that we can do it again.”

I loved Amy and Tina’s response to the President being there.

“That was Hillary Clinton’s husband,” host Amy Poehler exclaimed after the surprise guest left the stage.

“That was Bill Rodham Clinton!” Tina Fey exclaimed.

A US Default Would Be The Financial Equivalent Of This Painting Of Hell

“If Congressional Republicans refuse to pay America’s bills on time, Social Security checks, veterans benefits will be delayed,” Obama said. “… Investors around the world will ask if the United States of America is in fact a safe bet. Markets could go haywire. Interest rates would spike for anyone who borrowed money.”

One analyst — Michael Feroli, the chief economist at JP Morgan — speculated what such a situation might look like, specifically if the U.S. missed a payment to bondholders.
It “would be like the financial market equivalent of that Hieronymus Bosch painting of hell,” Feroli told the Washington Post.
The painting is titled “The Garden of Earthly Delights” and is believed to have been painted by Bosch sometime between 1490 and 1510.

People Are Really Starting To Get It About The Deficit

The reason the deficit has swollen is not because of some big entitlement/big government crisis, but because unemployment has surged.
The deficit will get much smaller as unemployment continues to drop

From Daily Beast article by David Frum THE DEFICIT’S TAKING CARE OF ITSELF, the post notes that the deficit is down 9% from last year, mostly due to the improving economy.

The news last week that California is coming back is also a major revelation to people. It reveals that deficits aren’t this huge sign of a structural problem, but just what you expect to see in a major downturn.

And now people are talking about the national budget shrinking faster than expected.

Here’s Goldman’s Jan Hatzius, from his 10 Questions for 2013 note:
As the private sector balance sheet adjustment comes closer to completion, we expect the government deficit to diminish gradually; the fiscal adjustment shown in Exhibit 3 will push in the same direction. By 2015, we expect the federal deficit to be down to $500bn, or just under 3% of GDP. If this forecast is correct, concerns about the federal deficit are likely to diminish over the next few years.

Deficit fears are on the downslope. The only way we can screw it up is by cutting spending too soon!

KT, hasn’t he been to Farmington, UT? They have all he listed including a big amusement park called Lagoon. Don’t think Independence, Missouri, home of Harry S. Truman, will like him taking their name. Although, the LDS Church is the largest land holder just outside of town.
I don’t care if he has such a place as long as it has a great big wall around it to keep them IN.
Jonestown does come to mind, doesn’t it, KT? Kool-aid anyone?

Kes, no the NRA would tell you that everyone in the room should have had a gun. Now wouldn’t that have been a mess. If you read the whole article, one was taken to the hospital with hearing loss and another injured while hiding, let alone the poor individual actually shot. If everyone had a gun, spray of bullets every where, people falling over one another with guns in hands, and talk about noise factor. Instead, the teachers talk the kid down and no one else was hurt.

Kes, as you said, “NRA are you listening?” Or have you lost your hearing being around all those guns?

Student opens fire at California high school, wounding one

UPDATED, 12:37 p.m. PT: At least one student was shot when a classmate opened fire at a high school in California on Thursday.
The shooting occurred in the science building at Taft Union High School in Taft, Calif., at approximately 9 a.m. local time, a Kern County Sheriff’s official told Yahoo News.
The suspected shooter—a 16-year-old male student at the school—did not show up for the start of first period, police say. He entered the school with a 12-gauge shotgun and interrupted his first-period class, shooting one student police say he was targeting.
The gunman then called a second student’s name in the 28-person class and fired again, but missed, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said. A teacher and a campus supervisor engaged the shooter in conversation inside the classroom, school officials said, and were able to persuade him to put down the shotgun. The shooter was then taken into police custody.
According to the school’s website, “two campus supervisors and a Kern County Sheriff monitor the campus before, during, and after school.” But officials said the armed officer who is normally on campus was “snowed in” and not on duty at the time of the shooting. About 1,000 students attend the high school.

CHART: How The Clinton Surpluses Turned Into More Than $6 Trillion Worth Of Deficits

At the Democratic National Convention, Bill Clinton famously opined that ‘arithmetic’ was the magic trick that enabled him to be the last President to provide a budget surplus.
In 2001, the CBO projected that the total Clinton surplus of about $280 billion would balloon to $5.9 trillion worth of cumulative surpluses through 2011, when in reality the accumulated deficits reached $6 trillion at the end of that time period.
That’s pretty bad arithmetic. So what happened?
The U.S. Treasury Department recently tweeted this chart, which breaks down the major drivers that turned a small surplus into a massive deficit:

This chart paints a pretty poor picture of the CBO’s forecasting abilities, which account for well over half of the missing surplus.
While the ‘other annual appropriations’ category could use a little clarity, this chart also hits the nail on the head when it comes to identifying the major deficit drivers:
An extremely large tax cut that failed to pay for itself, two wars on the nation’s credit card, an unfunded expansion of an entitlement program, and general overspending turned what could’ve been a cushy surplus into a huge deficit.

KT, I also saw “Skyfall” the new James Bond film. Okay, it is good but I can’t say it is the best ever. If you like James Bond, you will like the movie. My problem is that I can’t see anyone as James Bond but Sean Connery, so, that is my main reason for saying this new movie isn’t the best ever. 😉

Nirek, if you like him that makes me like him even more. You can relate to him because of your experience and as you say the soldiers on the ground will respect him for his experience.
However, I have to add, your experience appears to have made you smarter. He became a Republican and you came out smarter from your experience to become a Democrat. 🙂

KT, I can see why they are and like I said, I don’t think we should show too much of how we do things and equipment used.
On Lincoln, you will like it, KT, even if you have seen other programs or movies. It is not so much the war/fighting as much as how Lincoln had to work Congress to get the proclamation through. Also, it shows the humor Lincoln had and the turmoil he dealt with in his personal life. It seems Lincoln had a million stories and jokes that he told. He used that a lot in trying to get to people. I think you will like it.

CL, in truth even in the movie, it is not torture that locate Bin Laden. That is why I don’t understand it shown. What locates him in the movie is this woman’s dedicated to her assignment. Learning and studying members, their names, and using her information when talking to other prisoners. When she would ask them something they would give her an answer and she would say, “You mean…so&so” or “No the guy you described sounds like so&so” so the prisoner figured she knew already and they let loose more info to her. That is more how I understand it happened and they do show that in the movie. The torture was how they started out but it wasn’t working. That is where I think people might misunderstand it.

I just watched “Zero Dark Thirty” and it was interesting and intense. According to the movie, they didn’t just rush in and shoot and get out. More were shot than I knew. Torture is hard to watch even when it is our guys doing it. But, what really got me is why would we allow a movie out there that shows our special forces and their equipment and their procedures based on an actual event? I mean there are movies about such things but we can only wonder if they really have these things or if it is all make believe. I know James Bond doesn’t really have all those gadgets but they look great in the movie. Somethings need to wait to be shown until years after and we have advanced so much further in techniques that what is shown in the movie is old news. So, if the bad guys are watching, they will be prepared for old and not the new. Just my opinion. It was slow starting but action packed at the end. No President Obama in it, just referred to as okaying after they knew more definite that Bin Laden was there. And, it was a woman that found him and pushed to get him, at least according to the movie.
Now, I also watched this weekend the movie “Lincoln” and that was great and very historical. War is terrible and especially when we are fighting ourselves! It was impossible to succeed then and it will be now, you Southern States crazies! Congress hasn’t changed and their techniques are mostly the same. Only thing is the parties made a complete switch around! I recommend it and think you will enjoy it.

French actor Depardieu in Russia to meet Putin

On Thursday, the Kremlin announced that Putin had signed a decree granting Russian citizenship to Depardieu, who objected to Socialist president Francois Hollande’s plan to impose a 75 percent tax rate on millionaires.

Some of Putin’s critics called the passport move a stunt and pointed out that Putin last month announced a campaign to prevent rich Russians keeping their money offshore.
Russia has a flat-rate income tax of 13 percent compared to the 75 percent rate that French President Francois Hollande wants to introduce on income over 1 million euros ($1.32 million).
Hollande’s original proposal was struck down by France’s Constitutional Court in December, but he has pledged to press ahead with a redrafted tax on the wealthy.
Russia does not require people to hand in their foreign passports once they acquire a Russian one. But it is rare for people from the European Union or the United States to seek Russian citizenship unless they have recent Russian roots.

Analysis: Geithner’s planned departure puts Obama in tough spot

The Treasury Department said Geithner “has previously stated that he plans to be at Treasury until around” the January 21 inauguration.
The department said it did not plan to make any further announcements about the timing of Geithner’s departure until after his successor is named. Bloomberg News reported that Geithner would leave at the end of January.

That puts Obama in the tough spot of nominating another Treasury secretary and asking the Senate to approve his choice when lawmakers are in the middle of another budget battle.
“The confirmation process will be nasty regardless as it will be a referendum on Obama’s economic and deficit plans,” said Chris Krueger, a policy analyst with Guggenheim Partners.

Obama’s chief of staff, Jack Lew, is widely expected to be chosen to replace Geithner. But a number of key Republicans do not like working with Lew, the former budget director, which could potentially exacerbate the raw relations between the administration and Congress.
“Geithner’s leadership and expertise would undoubtedly be a tremendous asset to the president and the country as we confront this next challenge,” said Max Baucus, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, which is in charge of vetting the next treasury secretary.
It is not clear who Obama would choose to lead negotiations for the next set of fiscal deadlines. Vice President Joe Biden, who helped broker the fiscal cliff deal, or Rob Nabors, the White House’s main liaison to Congress, could fit that bill.
