Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

Welcome, welcome, and welcome.

I look forward to another perspective. I’m sure we all do.

There’s an old saying that says “You can only see a small piece of sky when you are standing in a deep hole.” Americans in general are standing in that deep hole. We tend to have narrow points of view because we are rarely exposed, personally, to other places and cultures.

Some here, I see, have gone out of their way to climb out of that hole. Others may have never had the opportunity, except through reading and discussing the world with people that have open minds.

Your point of view will not only welcome, but valuable.

Don’t claim to understand it, really, but all I have to say is you really must have to want it to go through all that! And that’s enough for me!

Yow!

Ok, it’s midnight, and I’m going to turn into a bumpkin….. er pumpkin…. or something.

G’night all!

I was over there this morning in my YeOldePhartt persona just to see what was going on… and one thing I was going to do was to count the number of political sroies on the front page versus the fluff teasers. Never got around to it, but easily 75% of the front page are political stories or pieces.

I know what she doing. She’s counting the TABS and saying what she’s saying. Purely disengenuous.

OMG!

I see Arianna is on Bill Maher tonight…

I’m not sure I can stomach it.

When they deleted my post to a friend saying “this is my last day” that was it for me.

Abby,
My younger brother is a director for The Baytown Little Theater and he is going to do Wicked as soon as he can. I’ll be building sets.

We did Beauty & The Beast last summer. We even had people from Disney attend that one.

I’m a Huffaholic, and I deleted my account today.

LOL

Just to really date myself…

Somewhere I have 12″ disks with Lotus 1-2-3 v1.0 on them. Gawd!

I have used every version of DOS and Windows. But I migrated to Windows slowly. Big, fat, bloated, and slow. Think about how fast a program loaded in DOS on a 1meg machine versus how long it takes in windows…

Anyway, I have always paid attention to shortcut keys. That whole mousing around thing is just annoying when you want to type something.

I learned a thing many years ago…

We can learn from anyone, and everyone is smart in some way.

I got schooled once by a guy pushing a broom. I was the site manager on a $500mm paper mill project, and was sweeping up because I was frustrated by not being able to get a cleaning crew on time, so, true to form, I was doing it myself.

A painter’s helper from down the way showed up and took the broom away and told me I was raising too much dust because I had bad brooming technique, and proceeded to show me how to sweep with a push broom without raising dust.

We are all expert at something, and I have learned to listen closely to people.

Post and comment away. Find your voice.

Cat Maggie just starts walking on my face and meowing…

She likes her morning walks.

You mean the end DOESN’T justify the means?

Who knew?

Ahhhh…. no body language or facial expressions online…

I could not pass up the comment… it sort of popped out of my fingers.

As for AB’s moniker, I couldn’t resist the “ascared” comment, either. I have no fear online about this place, or frankly, any other.

It’s all pixels on a screen, and the machine has an On/Off button.

I sincerely hope my comments were taken in the vein they were given, some gentle teasing and wordplay with/to someone I don’t know but who is clearly a “senior” member here.

I don’t take things personally, and I try to be polite and have a little fun along the way. Ask anyone that knows me, and you’ll find I’m about as laid back as it gets.

Anyway… ’nuff said.

LOL I was ascared to post that comment to someone called AlphaBitch, but couldn’t resist.

Plus, being a newbie and all…

Hey Abby…

Deleted my PW account there today.

When I tried to post something to a friend, saying it was my last day, that was deleted within 30 seconds.

Sad…

I think what you have to do is to click on your original post. The site will go there, and you can see the thread. Just guessin’

That’s right!

And, coincidentally, right after that, there were at least 2 articles about how she LOVED her Crackberry!!

I know I am (or was, now) on no one’s list. Ask anyone that knows me, and they will tell you I went out of my way to be polite, even to trolls. I never got into flame fests, mainly because I didn’t care that much.

In the end, these are all just pixels on a screen, and the machine has an On/Off button. I don’t take it personally, and I have better things to do that to get upset over something someone says who I don’t know and will never meet.

So, I suspect that my innocuous post which went something like:

“Hey ____, just stopping by to let you know this is my last day here. If you see ‘YeOldePhartt’ you may know who that is… LOL”

Raptured within 30 seconds.

Didn’t she go ballistic on a flight, or during boarding or something? Maybe was told she couldn’t use her cell phone, or didn’t get the right temperature water…

Hard to say with divas. I remember she had an issue, but didn’t pay attention to the specifics.

Oh, and NEVER get into a price war with a competitor. You will lose.

Put it this way…

Would you rather have a $500K a year business making 20% net, or a $5MM a year company making 0.05% Net?

Do the math, and keep your good customers. Send the losers to your competitors.

KB, I will be doing at least one, and maybe two articles on how to properly cost, and then price things. Hang in there. I want to build up the whole thing properly from the ground up, not jump around.

There are two elements to pricing… internal costs, and external competition.

You have to know precisely what your true costs are, and then look at any competition in the marketplace.

You have to know a bunch of stuff to understand true costs, and I will go through that in detail once I’ve built the understanding and tools to get people there. Once you have costs, we go into pricing, which is NOT markup. Markups can get you killed!

Luck, buddy, and stick with it.

I love startups. My whole purpose in starting my own consulting business is to get to people BEFORE they get into trouble.

This series of articles is intended for that exact purpose in mind, and to help people get a better understanding of the ‘business of business.’

That way, when someone talks about, for example, how raising taxes is going to ‘kill jobs,’ an informed person can call bullshit, and know they are right, and have the tools to back it up.

Business is not mysterious. Con artists just make it look like that.
