But remember what I said… Excel RULES! And it’s Stats Add On package is very valuable in telling whether something is bogus or not. If you can get a handle on the principles of Stats and use Excel in the real world, you’ll find it is a GREAT tool. You need to use common sense, per your comment about outliers. I took it online… 2 courses… aced ’em both. The thing is, numbers and formulas speak to me somehow… they tell a story. That’s the way my head works. Give me a data cube of numbers, Excel, and some time, and I can slice and dice that puppy ’till the cows not only come home, but get milked and put out to pasture! Stats are one tool I use to study how a business operates. With enough historical data, properly organized, I can tell you pretty much how things are gonna go. I know most people hate Stats, but get through it, then download the Stats package from Excel and learn to use it. Since I have been using AOL since it was launched, I know it well. I don’t use it for anything much more than email and a chat room occasionally, I haven’t kept up with the current AOL ‘culture,’ but I was a room host for a while, and I find it interesting that AOL many years ago used volunteer workers in that way, and AH/HP {spit spit!} did the same thing. Did she take a lesson somewhere? Did AOL exec’s maybe school her in how to do that years ago with an eye towards the current merger? Was she talking to those guys back in the day about this aspect? It did not. I’m thinking that it is associated with the AOL application itself, and not the web based access point? I’ll keep an eye on it. It may be if you click on some sort of article or report or whatever that requires it, it may install itself. I always use “Custom” installation rather than the “Recommended” automatic installation on any software to inspect what they are installing. McAfee does it, too. For the last few months, I have been having problems with my AOL email account. It appears that I have had a pernicious virus that was randomly sending emails to everyone in my Contact List in that account. Scans by Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee, COMODO, and several other anti-virus programs turned up nothing. I completely deleted the AOL program (AOL 9.6) and wiped out all files, recompiled the hard drive, compacted the registry, and did everything but spray both my computers with Lysol, and reinstalled. Did this several times, a day-long affair each time… and the problem kept coming back. In addition, my email account was getting a TON of spam and emails from a wide variety of sources. A couple of days ago, since AOL also has a web-based application for email and other use access (AOL.com), I decided to just wipe the AOL program once again and not reinstall. Guess what? No more spam, and no more viral emails of my entire Contact List (which is also on the web-based application, BTW). It just occurred to me that the AOL application (AOL 9.x) may be being used by AOL itself or Contact Lists from that application may be being sold or used by others to access people’s email accounts. There is no other explanation in my estimation. Sneaky and nasty, IMO, if true. I have the same email account as always, the same contact list, everything is the same except that I eliminated the AOL stand-alone application on both machines. I’m a suspicious bastard by nature, and I’m suspicious in this. My point? Will the entire membership list from HP {spit!} be used some way by AOL in a similar fashion? No one is born, grows up, and decides just for the hell of it, to become evil. It develops, step by step, with each stop along the way being justified in some way, somehow. I don’t claim to understand it, I just know for certain that there ARE evil people out there doing evil things for all kinds of reasons, and I really don’t care about the magnitude so much as the fact that they are my enemies and the enemies of what I value. I documented all the times I was required by the dispatcher to keep separate log books, every time I had to work past the 10 hour federal limit to keep my job, the pages of the log books I submitted with clearly impossible distance versus time information that was signed off on by the company safety officer and so forth. It ran about 60 pages that included applicable federal statutes. It went to a UI judge and the hearing was by phone. I had faxed her my “statement.” The company was not represented. Her only question/comment to me was “Are you KIDDING?!?!?!?” She approved UI in about 2 minutes and we just chatted for another 15 while I educated her on the dirty side of the interstate trucking business.
