My Senator Bernie Sanders introduced legislation yesterday to close loopholes that let corporations avoid taxes by having their businesses off shore.

Tax Dodgers: Sen. Bernard Sanders introduced legislation Thursday that would close a loophole that allows U.S. corporations to avoid paying income taxes by keeping their profits overseas in countries with low corporate tax rates, the Times Argus, Bloomberg News, Chicago Sun-Times, The Hill, Think Progress and Raw Story reported. “If we’re serious about deficit reduction [then] corporate America, which is now enjoying record-breaking profits, is going to have to step up to the plate,” said Sanders, a member of the Senate Budget Committee.

Jobs Shipped Overseas: “This is a jobs issue, not just a tax issue … because what we`re doing is encouraging corporations to move their manufacturing plants, their offices to other countries where the tax rates are much lower,” Sen. Sanders said on MSNBC. ”I think it warrants the support openly of the White House,” Ed Schultz declared.

Saturday Mail: Lawmakers wrestled Thursday with how to address Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe’s announcement that the U.S. Postal Service plans to end Saturday mail delivery. A temporary spending measure, which expires March 27, includes language requiring six-day delivery. Sen. Sanders opposes Donahoe’s decision and told The Washington Post that he would fight any effort to remove the six-day-delivery requirement from the next spending bill. On the CBS Morning News, Sanders said the move would send the postal service into a “death spiral” while “doing very little to improve the financial condition of the Postal Service.”

Education: Senators took issue Thursday with the Obama administration for showering big grants on a small number of states under a controversial program called Race to the Top. At a Senate hearing, Sen. Sanders told Education Secretary Arne Duncan that “a relatively small amount of the states received the bulk of the money,” Reuters reported. The Huffington Post said Sanders criticized Duncan’s support for the competitive grant programs.

Kalima, only wackos need them. Those guns are designed for WAR! Not for hunting, target shooting, or self defense. There is no need for them except that the gun manufacturers make lots of money selling them.

Adlib, Bernie Sanders has been on this issue for a very long time. He is on our side. Bernie cares about Americans and the GOP only seem to care about the very wealthy.

Adlib, the postal service has had to fund the future retirees health benefits think. No other business has to do this. They have been behind the eight ball since the congress made them do this.

Congress has failed to do their jobs and I think the congress should lose its pay and benefits until they do their jobs.

CL, I agree to an extent. The trouble is clinging to these ideals is insane. I think the NRA plays to the fears (unfounded) of these mentally disturbed people. Thus , I put much of the blame on the NRA which is a puppet of the gun manufacturers.

I would like to see a law that makes gun owners buy liability insurance and register each gun each year like we do our cars.
Then I like the idea of a hefty tax on guns and ammo.

Kes’, thanks for the link. Dennis makes sense on some issues. We can’t cut our way to debt reduction on the backs of the poor and elderly (counting me). I’ll do my part and have been all along but we elderly folks are not typically rich.

Why doesn’t congress close all loopholes and cut all waste in government. Start with cutting some of the redundant administration. Deep cuts in defense spending.

There would be no need to cut any domestic programs. We could spend some of the savings on our crumbling infrastructure and create jobs which will bring in more revenue. A win WIN situation.

CL, I too will stop calling the undocumented people illegal. I will however call those employers who underpay undocumented people illegal employers.

I do agree that the term is degrading to good people who only want a better life.

Kalima, I need someone who is sane to explain how limiting semi-auto weapons and ammo is an infringement on the 2nd amendment rights.

I also think background checks to get these guns and the ammo for them each time one buys them and a hefty tax on them!

Glenn, nice to meet you. I think it will benefit all Americans if the illegal immigrants are allowed to stay and learn English and go through the process of becoming citizens. I also think the businesses that employ these people now should have to pay some BIG penalties for breaking the law. After all they have benefited from the use of cheap labor that didn’t have any rights !

I guess you and I are on the same page with this issue.

Just a few questions.
1) Do illegals pay taxes on their income?
2) Do the employers of illegals pay them fair wages and take taxes out ?
3) If the illegals become legal will they pay taxes?
4) If the employers of illegals continue to employ them, will they have to pay penalties for past crimes?
5) Would the jobs held by illegals still NOT be done by Americans?
6) Will extra taxes and penalties help pay down the debt?

Why are the republicans so worried about the four people killed in Libbya when they knew their lives were in danger and bravely did those jobs anyway? While at the same time they don’t care about 20 first grade children and some educators who had every right to feel safe in a grammar school? These same people make a big deal about one thing but encourage gun owners to buy more guns and want assault rifles to be sold too.

I think we should have background checks for buyers of the ammo for the assault rifles and tax the $hit out of those bullets.

It has taken a long time for us to evolve and include everyone in America when we say that we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In fact we are not yet all inclusive but this great President is working toward “the pursuit of happiness” for all Americans. No matter the color or gender or sexuality.

I’m proud that I voted for President Obama twice now.

Since today is MLK day as well as President Obama’s big day I want to acknowledge a woman in history who I admire even more than these two men. Rosa Parks was a quiet lady who sat for her rights. To me she is the first lady of the civil rights movement. I wish I had had a chance to meet her and tell her how much I admire her.

Every MLK day I think of both him and her. She was a real lady and deserves to be remembered, as well.

Sally, this morning I had 18 wild turkeys outside my house here in Northfield Vermont. We are at the end of a dead end road still in the village. We had a four horse farm until my wife hurt her back. All kinds of wildlife come to visit because it is a safe haven for critters.

Funk, when the founding fathers wrote the constitution they had no idea that there would be auto and semi-auto guns that could shoot hundreds of bullets without reloading. Their guns were single shot muskets.

I say go for single shot guns and tax the $hit out of bullets!
