Beatlex, I check in several times a day. I spend most of that time on Off Topic. You can start a conversation and leave and do something else then come back. I like this place, but I do look at HP and comment much less there than I used to.

Most of us are welcoming and like minded at TO for OT.

Funk, that is cleaver. I think turn about is fair. Too bad the church that protests veterans funerals (something baptist church) doesn’t get this kind of treatment.

Sally, you have it right, give to folks you know need help. The big scams all have administration costs that take away from the needy.

I’m in the checkout line but there seems to be a few ahead of me. I am not in a hurry to check out.

Our soldiers have a duty they took on and served with the expectation that they would not be put in harms way without good reason.

Our politicians have a duty to be sure that when they sent the soldiers into harms way that there is good reason.

We the people have a duty to vote for the politicians who will fulfill their duty as well as our soldiers have theirs.

Our soldiers have done their duty well.

Our politicians have failed to do their duty!

We the people have failed and must start over. We must elect politicians who will do their duty and take responsibility for doing so.

Too many of us fail to vote and that is the same as voting for the bad politician!

On a personal note, this evening I went with my kid sister to the hospital and visited my brother (3 years older than me) not the one who had surgery. He is at the end of his life. When my sister and I walked in he perked up and seemed genuinely glad to see us. He and I grew up all over the eastern U.S. and Germany. We were thick as thieves until he went to college and the family move to Panama.
We went in different directions in life. Kind of lost touch.
This visit we reminisced about the early years. It was therapeutic for me. He has some dementia but was very clear about our shared past. He started smoking Camels when he was 7 and even while on oxygen at home he still smokes. That is what the root cause of his health problems is.

It was good to see him and visit one last time.

I love the Planet where I can be off topic and get away with it.

KT’s post makes me think about the bastardization of the word “conservative”. The GOP calls themselves conservative. However a true conservative has nothing to do with GOP type politics.
The GOP is actually the opposite of true conservatives. They don’t want to conserve anything but their $$$$$.

Ad, I couldn’t agree more. some other countries have laws that keep guns to a minimum. We should also. Hunting or target shooting is one thing but nobody needs a gun that will shoot twenty or more bullets in rapid succession !

Another case of an assault rifle being used to shoot people in LAX. Assault rifles have no use that is productive. They are a military weapon. No civilian has a need for one.

KT, if not for my Dad being a WWII and Korean war vet I might have gone to Canada when I got the draft notice.
I hold no ill will towards anyone who got to stay in country for any reason.

You say I have “earned boatload of knowledge about the sheer stupidity of violence” . I thank you for that complement. My wish for everyone is peace. I believe that peace plus love = happiness.

Sorry for so many posts,but 44 years ago today I landed at Oakland AF Base from Vietnam and mustered out of the Army. They wanted me to reenlist! I told them I never enlisted in the first place. I was drafted.

I try to forget all the horror of WAR, unsuccessfully.

During the summer of 1950 my Grandfather took all of us for a picnic at a park in Burlington Vermont. He had a 1947 Hudson parked with doors open windows down and was seated listening to the Red Sox. He called to me “Mike come here” I came over he said “the bases are loaded and Pete Runnels is up, he’s going to hit a grand slam”. Pete did indeed hit a grand slam. That infected me with Red Sox fever. I’v suffered from it all these years. Today is a great day for all of Red Sox nation! My Grandfather is smiling down at us now from above.

I’m happy they won in Boston and feel for the Cards. They played well but the better team won.

Sports are a good way to escape the inept congress. Trouble is when the game is over , the congress is still there NOT doing their job!

The WARS cost us trillions of $’s.
The shutdown cost us 24 billion $’s.
Freddie and Fannie cost us 187 billion $’s
The hearings Issa has had have cost us unknown $’s.

Now they are concerned about the millions of dollars it takes to get the ACA (AKA Obama care). They spent %24 billion shutting the government down. How much of that $24 billion could be used to help disaster victims? Head start? Food stamps? . . . .

Yet, these Republicans want to cut Social Security which is paid for by the payroll tax. They want to cut billions from the food stamp program. They want to cut the minimum wage altogether.

All of this is brought on by hate. The politic of hate , hatred of our President. Hatred of the poor and middle class folks.

CL, you make a great point. We paid into the Social Security “trust” fund all our working lives. Now that we are taking some of “our ” money out of the fund, they want to steal our money!

Kalima, this story opened my eyes. There is a BIG problem with reporting the “news”. All the facts get deleted due to space or brevity. No need for those pesky facts. Just write some false but interesting story.

KT, I admit to believing in God (Mother Nature) . I go out into the woods on my land and am in awe. The beauty of the trees, berry bushes, and critters has me convinced that God is indeed out there.
I too have a problem with those few religious folks who don’t follow Jesus, Buddha, or whoever they claim is their God. Any religion can be perverted. We see the Muslim religion perverted by the extremists. Our countries own religions are also perverted by extremists as well.

Those who have faith are fine no matter which faith they have. It is the extremists of all faiths who ruin religion, in my mind.

If corporations are people, why is BoA NOT in jail?

I know the answer. Corporations are not people. They are evil greedy groups of investors. They do not care who gets hurt as long as they make a big profit. The CEO and other execs should be jailed and have to pay restitution.

Assumed, I don’t believe the government or doctors or anyone else has a right to decide for a woman what is best for her. She should have control of her body and nobody else should be allowed to force her into anything.

Ad, thanks for the well wishes. I went up to the hospital to bring him home this morning. He is fine.

I fear that younger people do not respect us older folks and don’t understand that we have gained some wisdom through experience.

Why do I keep hearing that the problem is the old folks? I am old. I spent the day at the hospital (took my brother for an operation and waited to see him in recovery room). Talked to a lot of older folks and every one of them said they were frustrated with the shutdown and blamed the republicans. We old folks are strong Democratic voters!
