Time Out for O/T – Vol. 18

We were surprised. Some of the regular volunteers are saying that there is a lot of anger in the community re. Akin. His lawn signs were everywhere during the primary and have been getting fewer and fewer as the weeks have gone by. I am stuck with my farm so while I would love to be on some island that is not in the tea leaves…the Dems need to win.

WRITING FROM A DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN OFFICE IN MISSOURI

A Dozen GOP Women have had enough.

I am working at a call center coordinating the worker of 40 phone bankers.

A half hour ago, a dozen women walked in. They were angry and they were ill at ease.

The spokeswoman for the group, asked who was in charge. I stepped up assuming they had come in to volunteer. Indeed they had. AND….THEY WERE ALL REPUBLICAN.

The women were known to a number of our volunteers as active GOP women in our small town America county. They were stunned.

The spokeswoman told us that her group had been meeting today to plan its Get Out the Vote work when the word came out that both McCain and McConnell (along with other GOP leaders) were backing Mourdock’s statement. They were astounded. “We are pro life, but what he said and how he said it shows that he has no place for women in a decision that is not easy; that’s really complex- we are women and mothers – and the men of this Party have just stopped listening to us. His apology was just an excuse. We have had it.”

So…they came to volunteer for McCaskill against Akin. They said they still had not made up their minds about walking away from Romney, but it was amazing they brought it up.

We put them to work.

Remember my review of this awful film here? Airing propaganda for free.

This has been a very nasty political day. I have been involved in electoral politics for a long time but I think this race is setting new and very low standards for dirty tricks and lies.

All true.

I have heard a lot today from moderate GOP and Dems here in Mo (both of whom are likely to vote GOP quite often)and they were shocked. The image of Romney the Obama campaign was putting forth was confirmed.

Yes…I am with you…I wish they were neighbors I would make an effort to bring them along.

On a positive front, I have five Ron Paulians voting democratic in response to the way they were treated by the GOP and in recognition that Romney and his crowd will give the country away to the rich at an even faster pace.

kQ- do hope you are correct. Still I worry- but I am a worrier. Those two were the very embodiment of the cattle in the GOP base being driven to slaughter happy just to get a little fodder and some water.

I feel bad for the kids. I also feel bad for the parent since I think they are victims of a very sophisticated and concerted effort to drive them toward decisions that work against their own interest. They struck me a simple folk without a lot of education trying to do what is right. I could be wrong but I see them as victims as well.

Despite all of the buzz tonight (and I admit that I have been in the midst of it) I had this sobering moment.
=================================================

I just came back the grocery store. There was a mom, in a nurses uniform- her badge said she is a nursing assistant- and a dad, in a mechanics overalls with a little patch with the name of the garage he worked at. They had two little girls who were telling mom and dad about their day at grandma’s.

They paid for their groceries, in part, with food stamps (the SNAP card).

So hard working and not making it, I thought. Nice people too.

I saw them drive out of the parking lot in an old, old car….on the bumper this sticker:

ROMNEY/RYAN 2012

yes…..I remember seeing Panorama in the UK when I studied there. I do not think it is on BBCA (America) because its content is not American enough (for our narrow little minds).

» Posted By MurphTheSurf3 On August 29, 2012 @ 6:44 pm

Yes…I have now seen some of their on-the-scene reporters. Quite good. I suppose what I was saying is that having their anchor team at their studios (which I think are in California) gives them distance from the hubbub on the floor outside of that spotlight the whole conversation seems a good deal saner.

Newsroom- the way we wish news really was. Olbermann without the petulance and with a truly crackerjack investigative team.

Watching Current again tonight. Al Gore, Cenk Uygur, Jennifer Granholm, John Fugelsang panel….(David Schuster, once of MSNBC and fired in a battle for editorial control, is on the floor)quickly becoming my favorite way to watch the convention. They are not in Tampa which means they are watching all of this from the same perspective as I do and the panel has two people on it who had careers in politics. They bring in other experts, mostly second tier people- but often, because they are not celebrities better informed.

A few moments ago they spoke about George W. Bush and Gore was remarkable in the answer he gave- diplomatic but pointed placing responsibility on many tables even his own.

I am also noticing that Current has more high end commercials. Could it be the “little channel that could” is climbing the hill.

Why is it that these voter registration restrictions have so devastated Dem registrations and not the GOP. What does that say about the Dems? Or are the laws being applied differently.

» Posted By MurphTheSurf3 On August 29, 2012 @ 4:52 pm

The chart was run on MSNBC twice this afternoon but there was no “as of” date that I could see.

Before I forget…does it seem to you that the floor of the GOP convention seems very small? And I have noticed that the crowds in the bleachers have been less than spectacular. Hurricane, desire of the RNC to control and limit access.

Watched a bunch of interviews today- everyone is being so guarded and so careful. The Paulistas are not being talked to by anyone in the media it seems.

BTW, have you read the extraordinary article by Matt Taibbi re. Bain…if Matt just were not so wordy and laborious. I am going to try to boil the article down to something more accessible.

KQ…I live in Missouri. The Mississippi is now closed to large boat and barge traffic in three sections for a total of 31 miles- it’s choking the commerce. This is historic but the folks in my area have turned to prayer as the answer. It’s like living in a prehistoric world here.

The law was partially struck in early June. I wonder if the catchup is actually taking place. Don’t know. Just asking. http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/05/31/2826067/federal-judge-strikes-down-part.html

Bain???? read Matt Taibbi devastating article in Rolling Stone today. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/greed-and-debt-the-true-story-of-mitt-romney-and-bain-capital-20120829

Salt Lake- 1.3 Billion in federal money and .3 billion from the state- lobbying as bailout.

Mass. Gov. – ran like the wind from the state with a popularity rating of 34 percent having raised taxes disguised as fees and piled on state debut and despite creating the GOP model for Health Care Reform cannot use it because Obama did.

What can they talk about?

His Mormon Faith- Let’s trot out the White Horse Prophecy.

Your time was better spent watching an animal story.

When I read Christie’s speech this morning I wondered if he got his mentoring from Giuliani. Immediately following the speech Christie made a tour of the four delegation suites that represent the first four primaries for 2016. Coincidence?

Canada….they have a Conservative resurgence there too, but my impression is that the Great North is moving to toss them out on their ears.

Yes, I was with Current at the beginning of the evening (very tired of the lightweigt treament on the major networks, and the bending over backwards at MSNBC to seem fair (and balanced?).

Saw it this morning. Kept hoping the gate would open and suck him right into a Goa’uld world where a System Lord would enslave him. You know, those chains that Biden referred to.

Ad Lib…morning…I re-read my post this morning and do not regret a word. Last night at HP I got dozens of affirmations and only a few critiques….even today looking at the coverage of the events last night….there is an evident lack of genuine enthusiasm even from the GOP’s supporters. This is all about going through the motions in front of the cameras while the puppeteer masters in their luxury penthouses hold audiences for their mannequins and vassals and do the REAL business of the convention.

Your comments run parallel to mine. Nothing to see here. The most important moment in the day: when Boehner gaveled down the voices of Paulista Protest objecting to yet another GOP action to restrict freedom of expression.

I talked to my two young friends this morning – the two who were so enthusiastically for Paul, and who saw the rules of representation rewritten at the state level. They have decided not to write in Paul’s name in November. They tell me that this is the e mail buzz this morning. Somewhat in contradiction…they are not happy with Paul having given n so easily (despite the “counter convention” he held just a few miles form the RNC official) because they seem him cooperating with party to preserve a future for his son.

Remember when the RNC was going to do a video tribute and the Paul people planned to protest it….the rules change was the response along with the cancellation of the video.

The GOP – continuing its use of the Constitution as a prop – Bill of Rights as inspiration only when it fits their purposes.

I AM NOT WATCHING THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION…
I can’t take the lies, the hate & the pandering

A personal message

I spent part of yesterday watching the lead in to the real opening of the convention today. I watched the interviews. I read the back stories. I spent time with the commentators and pundits.

I spent a good bit of time on line dueling with far too many who were defending the indefensible.

I spent more time chatting with those who were feeling uneasy and angry like myself.

More back stories, more pundits, more commentators. And then the “human, down home side of the Romney’s features began running with talk of Costco shopping and the fine shirts they make; or of Ann making her “famous” home made cookies that she then served to reporters on the plane.”

I saw John Boehner arrogantly hammer down his own party members who dared to object to a process that will shut down future “Ron Paulians” from having a voice in their party.

I sat through the first two speakers and then I gave a name to my pain.

I JUST CAN’T TAKE THE LYING- THE VICIOUS, NASTY, SELFISHLY MOTIVATED LYING first to ther own delegates and then to everyone else tuning in to sample their vile bile and pompous pandering.

IF THEY WIN….These people on stage will HURT their own constituents badly in the years to come. They will deeply damage the fabric of the Republic. They will destroy the social safety net. They will take us into war. They will transfer more and more wealth from the barely haves to the have a lots, from the middle class to the upper class. They will do this in service to their masters: the very wealthiest among us; and they will do it because they are being paid to do it.

AND I AM CONVINCED THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO TRANSFER RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL OF THIS TO THE DEMOCRATS….OR THE MUSLIMS….OR THE SOCIALISTS….OR THE POOR….
I truly detested what they were doing.

It was then that set myself free.

I TURNED IT OFF. I will scan the speeches on line. I will see the highlights (lowlights) on the news channels but I could not pretend to give these awful creatures a moment of my real time.

So, I am on line, reading, and have The Big Bang Theory playing. The characters on that show make a lot more sense to me than the ones on stage in Tampa.

I appreciate your very rapid response to my request. As I saw the story spreading across the internet I realized that my initial skeptical reaction to the model that led to my dismissing it as nonsense had been premature. Others were clearly taking it very seriously.

» Posted By MurphTheSurf3 On August 23, 2012 @ 8:14 pm

Terrific. I need to take your insights and work them into a more systemic response to the model.

AdLib, it is everywhere on the right wing blogosphere and is being used as a sledgehammer on the left and as a rallying point on the right. The trolls are seeing the model as heavy duty artillery.

Might this be something you could toss together and publish as a short article for the readership and the community?

You are incredible in matters like this.
