I think there are grounds to doubt how acceptable he will be once his fuller story gets known. I live in Missouri and one Baptist Pastor here who I know has told his congregation that repentance and a moment of conversion admits one to the fellowship, BUT NOT to the leadership of the fellowship. Leaders must have a proven record of unremitting faithfulness. Here is how I read it: His past personal life certainly seems to suggest that courting evangelical voters would be an uphill battle: to begin with, he divorced his first wife – while she battled cancer. He is currently married, not to the woman for whom he left his first wife, but to his third wife, a congressional aide with whom he had an affair – while he was leading the impeachment campaign against Bill Clinton for his own infidelities. Ahead of the Iowa caucuses, Gingrich has yet to sign the Iowa FAMiLY Leader’s traditional marriage pledge, but he is reportedly reconsidering previous objections. If he does sign, Gingrich will have to find a way to square his own story with the pledge to “acknowledge and regret the widespread hypocrisy of many who defend marriage yet turn a blind eye toward the epidemic of infidelity and the anemic condition of marriages in their own community.” Recent polling by Public Religion Research Institute drives home just how much of a problem Gingrich’s personal history could be going forward: -Fifty-seven percent of Americans and fully 70 percent of both white evangelicals and Republicans say that an elected official who commits adultery should resign. -Most significantly, white evangelical Protestants in particular tend to draw a straight line between fidelity in personal life and trustworthiness in professional life. While the general population is evenly divided, 64 percent of white evangelical Protestants and a majority (55 percent) of Republicans disagree that an elected official who commits an immoral act in their personal life can still behave ethically and fulfill their duties in their public and professional life. Consistent with these findings, there has been some resistance on the ground. Fired up AND Ready to Go In the Spring of 2007 I met Barack Obama at a South Carolina Democratic gathering. I had decided to support him based on the recommendation of friends from Illinois and after reading his two books. I volunteered for the event at which all of the Dems running for the SC nomination vied with each other. Clinton, Edwards, Biden, Dodd et.al. and this young guy with a name we did not know how to pronounce, not to mention chant. His campaign had no money and everyone said, no chance. We had hand-made signs and were gathered at the first entrance door to the auditorium – the only one not taken by other candidate’s crowds. When his car pulled up to the auditorium it went to the wrong door- our little ragtag crowd was so small and so random looking the driver passed us by, and went to the next door where Edward’s supporters and a marching band were gathered. Obama’s car stopped, 100 feet away from us, Barack climbed out of the car, saw the Edwards signs in the hands of that crowd realized what had happened, shook his head, got back into the car, and……..almost absurdly, the car backed up to where we were standing. He exited again,but by this time we were totally confused and dispirited. There were a few muted half-hearted chants of oddly phrased efforts to capture his name: BA-RACK, or OB-AM-A. None of it sounded good. But Barack just smiled and began shaking hands and talking to us. He thanked us. He spoke lines of support for us. As he moved through our little crowd the mood changed. He had connected to us. And then, smiling broadly he proclaimed: “Are all y’all FIRED UP!” and someone in our little group knew the response and yelled: “READY TO GO.” He said it again and more responded, one more time, and we all took up the chant. Tehran is ready to temporarily supply its need for 20%-enriched uranium for its 5-megawatt Tehran [Research] Reactor from abroad if the sanctions are lifted while negotiations proceed. A positive step in relations between the two nations? Maybe, but certainly a good sign. Iranian business people have admitted that the sanctions have been crippling to the Iranian people. With their trade effectively shut off, the exchange rate for their currency was slashed by over 80%, and continuing to plummet. The nation is facing crucial shortfalls of crucial goods, from wheat, flour, sugar, and red meat, as well as aluminum and steel. If the shut down were more than a few weeks long the impact on the program will be very significant. Nuclear development is not something you can just suspend and restart at will. The materials degrade, decompose, and pollute themselves over time. Any successful nuclear program requires continuous active development. Once a program is shut down, in effect it will need to be restarted from scratch. Years of effort, gone. The Obama sanctions may have a real chance of restoring balance to the region. Flip flopping, etch a sketching and Romnesia explained away as a mature response to changing conditions. Ridiculous. The editorial is short and unpersuasive. Here is the problem: They are endorsing someone who does not exist. They find plans for the economy where there are none. They ignore huge shifts in policy as if they never happened or are praiseworthy. They ignore major issues that will affect millions. The editorial headline is: Mitt Romney offers a fresh economic vision. Honor the Norquist pledge to not raise taxes; follow the Bush formula of cutting taxes without any proof they will do any good; and cut deeply creating the austerity that has driven Europe into a double dip recession. This is “fresh.” The editorial points to his “success” in bipartisan government in Massachusetts. 823 budgetary vetoes- all overridden. The rescue of RomneyCare by Ted Kennedy. His transfer of the cost of major state programs to local government resulting in property tax increases. They laud his management of the Olympics in Salt Lake. But the Romney “miracle” was a huge lobbying effort that led to the largest federal grant to an Olympics before or since (by a factor of 5). I saw the front page of the Des Moines Register on Friday. It is revealing. The headlines, “Obama Sharpens Criticism” and “Romney Expresses Optimism” portrays Obama as a negative campaigner and Romney as the positive, future agenda oriented leader. The photos accompanying the headlines are equally revealing. Obama is scowling, looking over his shoulder in a defensive and seeming crouched position with a dour crowd around him. Romney stands above Obama, smiling naturally, reaching out as the crowd reaches toward him.
