I read this in another post and just had to comment on this popular notion today that is, in fact, COMPLETELY wrong: “The real issue here is that when you criticize white people in power for using their power to further oppress black people, you’re being racist.” A member of a subgroup, not of the dominate race, CANNOT be racist, they can ONLY be prejudiced. But for any race lacking the power of the dominate race, the term “racist” cannot apply. The English language, vis-a-vis the term racist, has been dumbed down to somehow include anyone who holds racial prejudice toward another race. Racism is an act of preferential treatment based on race: the exclusion of any other race by the dominate race in any facet of society. Let’s take a look at the Oxford examples of their definition of racism: “The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” This definition is the one that American whites cling to because they can point to themselves as the recipient of so-called racist behavior when clearly they are the race in power in the United State; today’s popular pity party. Let’s take a look at Oxfords second example: “Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior” This is where American racism’s rubber meets the road. Since non-whites simply cannot tilt any portion of the country’s playing field to benefit their own kind, prejudicial beliefs and behavior of any subgroup has no net effect on the dominate culture/race at large. Understandably, whites are tired of being reminded that they hold the power in American society in terms of economy, access to the American dream, etc, and now claim that they are the victims of racism which is patently untrue. Today’s whites (and not all of them, before I get a load of whining about how I paint with too broad a brush) live in fear of the non-white other, fostered by the 24/7 pronouncements over the last generation of how the Black or Latino person is unfairly getting what rightfully belongs to whites. A perfect example is the deafening accusations that Affirmative Action is prejudicial to whites, that white students are being unfairly denied the same opportunities to attend ______________ (<-name your university or college here) because Affirmative Action awards "their" slot to an undeserving minority candidate. Affirmative Action was designed to address centuries of deprivations faced by non-whites, women, physically and mentally handicapped persons preventing equal access to the largess of the American dream; essentially reserved only for white men. When Affirmative Action is no longer providing opportunities to candidates who have suffered the deprivations of an inferior education because they lived in a red-lined neighborhood, for example, the white candidates who get those AA slots are benefiting directly from racist policies. Racism can only be applied by the dominate race, never to any other because those members of the various subgroups never have the power to exercise preferential treatment over the dominate group. The US gives Israel $140B a year in direct and indirect aid, the amount given to Palestine is numbered in the millions of dollars. Couple that with the fact that the United States gave direct assistance in making Israel a rogue nuclear power, it’s hard to asses equal blame on both sides. It’s interesting that the press outside the US finds the actions of the Israelis far more grievous than that of Hamas, the duly elected government of Palestine; and that includes The British press. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but The US is an enabler in the continued attempted genocide of the Palestinian people. The bottom line is that less than 100 people, split between the Israeli and Hamas governments, are propelling this conflict forward.
