On CBC radio this morning they were interviewing the head of a Christian College here in the TO area about the Koran burning in Florida and the interview was very reasonable and all about how dreadful that whacko-pastor (my words) was but then the interviewee made the mistake of comparing free speech rights and responsibilites to the not-a-mosque-nowhere-near-Ground-Zero and going on about how Cordoba House was named for a site of conquest by Islam and how they pulled down a church to build a mosque in Spain. And the damned interviewee wasn’t challenged on his POV – I wanted to spit!! This has all erupted since the discovery that many native women, who had turned to prostitution, were victims of a seria killer in BC – a pig farmer by the name of Pickton. The details are quite gruesome – he was a pig farmer, use your imagination!! The sub text to this story is that for years the Vancouver police had ignored the fact that so many women were missing and refused to link the disappearances. On one or more occasions, during perfunctory investigations into the disappearances, they had actually interviewed Pickton but claimed there was no evidence to link him to anything. Following Pickton’s trial and conviction, there has now surfaced the accusations of racism both in the Pickton investigation (or lack thereof) and in other missing native women. We have a government right now that’s looking for an issue and thinks they have found it 🙄 . They kicked up the same ruckus about the last boat that arrived – claimed those nasty terrorists could be on board but, to the best of my knowledge, all of the refugees were in fact what they claimed to be. I have no problem with them going after the boat owners who deal in human cargo, though – it’s a despicable practice. On a side note – our current government is proposing to spend something like $8 billion on new prisons – when the crime rate is going down. When asked why they’d spend money with a huge government deficit on unneeded prisons and a falling crime rate the minister responsible replied that the unreported crime rate was rising – HUH???? I’ve been reading it daily for about two weeks now and I am pleasantly surprised at both the level of intelligence exhibited by his bloggers and the civility of discourse from the commenters – although I must admit that most of the commenters seem to be liberals 😀 (which those ultra RW-ers who come in to scream at everybody think as well 🙄 ) I’ve known of David Frum for many, many years but mostly as the son of one of my favorite CBC broadcasters, Barbara Frum, who died in ’79 I think. I reviled Mr. Frum as being just waaaaay too right wing in his opinions and I was kind of glad that he went to inflict himself on you guys.
