A farmer in Canada (and I forget where) was successfully sued by Monsanto for having illegal GM crops on his field and he swore up and down that the GM crop had re-seeded itself from a neighbouring farm. I’ll try and find the link to back my claim up. Edit: A little backtracking here – the farmer claimed the GM seeds blew in from a neighbouring farmers field ….. I agree about the GM seeds – I also do not believe the crops are as sterile as claimed. It will be interesting to see how many non-GM farmers will be sued by Monsanto when GM crops appear on their fields!! » Posted By Mightywoof On March 28, 2011 @ 5:33 am Q, on the CBC this morning they were reporting that Alfalfa farmers in the States have just been given permission to grow genetically modified alfalfa ……. the organic farmers in Canada are very worried by this as they’ll have no way of knowing if the feed they import will be GM or not – they could lose their organic certification. I never buy veggies or fruit out of season (except for bananas to my shame) and always buy locally when I can – I also grow my own veggies and try to can stuff for the winter -but I know that many folks cannot do this; they either don’t have gardens or they work and don’t have the time. I’m lucky being retired – I have both the garden and the time but when I was working there’s no way I could do it. The problem is that the Liberals just haven’t found their mojo – I had great hopes when Ignatieff became leader but he just hasn’t caught fire; a very intelligent man but not leadership material, sad to say. I think Harper has been very good at keeping his party in line – he’s a very dictatorial man and secretive, does not allow anybody from his party to step out of line and always controls the message (there have been few scrums, if any, in the House since he became Prime Minister). If the other parties can control the issue messaging – contempt for and of parliament, the excessive cost of unproven planes for the military, spending billions on building new prisons when the crime rate is going down and has been for decades, the election spending scandal from ’08 – then they may deny Harper the majority he’s seeking and might snatch the government from his hands. The Liberals are not resonating with the public though so it’s anybody’s guess right now. The NDP, the Greens and the Bloc will never be the governing party although the Bloc could become the official opposition at some point if the conservative vote collapses completely (as happened after Kim Campbell was defeated in ’93). There are 16 school bus size generators, contaminated with radiation, that have just been given permission, by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, to transport them on ships through the Great Lakes and across the Atlantic to Sweden for cleaning. The American government has yet to say what their opinion is on this plan but I’m not holding my breath that they will deny permission.
