As Pepe reported, the NDP have been surging in the polls up here and Friday it was reported in the Toronto Sun (owned by QMI Agency, who owns Quebecor Media, who also owns Sun TV which is our Fox News North) that the NDP Leader, Jack Layton, was found in a massage clinic by police who warned him that the place was suspected of being a bawdy house (yes – we have cute names right from the mid-18th century up here). I’m not surprised the dome you built worked – hot air rises 😆 ……. I can also attest to basements being geothermal; in Ontario, all basements have to be so many feet (4 I think) below ground level and our basement is always the coolest place in the summer! It’s also warm in the winter but I think that’s more due to our furnace being down there than any geothermal properties. Solar would be great but it really isn’t feasible in Canada – not enough sun throughout the year, although some folks use solar panels to heat their pools. Up here, as well as geothermal – which relies on the earth’s heat – is the idea of passive solar energy. If you’re building your own house – few if any windows on the north side and lots of windows on the south; this has to be combined with a low enough roof overhang to provide shade in the summer months but in the winter, the sun is so low in the sky (when it appears at all) that you then get the benefit of passive solar, add in concrete flooring (although that a whole other conversation) which soaks up and retains heat and you can be completely off the grid for heating needs. Then there’s radiant heating from central fireplaces with masonry walls. There are so many options to provide heat up north!! Unfortunately – to generate power to run appliances – especially the all-important ‘puter – requires either solar panels or wind power or some combination. This is why it becomes such an expensive proposition for an individual. I would love to build a straw-bale home …… both for the amazing insulating properties and the organic feel of those homes which is so very appealing but – always a but, isn’t there – I don’t know of any builders in our destination province that build straw-bale and neither hubby nor I have any experience in building anything let alone our own house! I saw a pic once of a straw bale house with round windows and a round door – yaaaay Hobbits 😆 » Posted By Mightywoof On April 20, 2011 @ 11:25 am I don’t think Canada has a lot of geothermal as it’s really an individual initiative rather than a government one. I’m also (woefully) unaware of any government incentive programmes to encourage folks to go solar/windpower/geothermal. It’s a huge upfront cost still but the payback is: no more bills for energy – which, if you are younger than I (just about anybody else on the planet – and Planet) really makes the systems pay for themselves. Interestingly, Malcolm Gladwell’s father, who lives just an hour west of here, went geo-thermal a few years back. The problem with the independents is they can be dissuaded from voting Democrat because Democrats don’t seem to be able to get their act together. All they can see right now, as lunatic as the rw appears to us, is that the Repubs are doing something about the deficit and debt and seem to be acting together – as much as we and other political junkies know this to be a fallacy, the message isn’t getting out there and Democrats, in an election season, actively decrying Obama and calling him as much a war criminal as Bush (among other things) can destroy any hopes of a second term and the Repubs will take over. I don’t know how the Obamanots can be persuaded that this is against their own best interest having read the DK article and comments – they are beyond persuading and will do real damage to the Democratic election hopes. Bad move – just because the American Revolution worked out so well the first times doesn’t mean the good guys will win again. No leader, no matter how exalted, can deliver all the goodies especially under your system of governance and, as much as some may be disappointed in what has not been achieved, strategic voting to keep the bad guys out is an honourable way to ensure that things do not get any worse and may, in fact, get better. If Democrats of all stripes can stop fighting each other and overwhelmingly return Obama to his second term, just think how much more emboldened and liberated he will be to pursue the good policies he has already begun and take on more. But – there’s always a but 🙂 – back then, movie’s were still a relatively new phenomena and, even today, if you point a camera at someone they’re compelled to fill empty airspace with the sound of their own voice – I defy anyone who is being filmed to resolutely keep their mouth shut! I agree that Mr Zero was full of himself and his good works but perhaps that was the societal norm back then – ‘pity the poor’ may well have been the prevailing attitude as, perhaps, was patronizing them. It’s something we would all recoil at today but who knows if folks my grandparents age would have felt the same way about Mr Zero and his attitude.
