Hubby had 2 on his side, I had 2 on mine. In the dead of night, they all started to snore and suddenly we had stereo, it was hard to sleep but we never tried to wake them up, that was left to out little Abyssinian, who would pop up from under the bedclothes to bite their tails. We have for the most part become complacent in our attitudes because many of us have so much compared to others in many countries, freedom being one thing that has been taken for granted along with the right to vote, to have an education, to work for our families and provide shelter, food and clean drinking water. We forget just how lucky we are. Another indication is that the old form of apprenticeship is almost dead. Young people no longer want to train for next to nothing learning a dying craft from their parents or from someone who is revered in their field of expertise. We have become an instant gratification people, no longer willing to wait for a handmade pair of shoes which might take a month to complete but would last a lifetime. Craftsmanship is no longer appreciated and those small businesses have given way to mass produced kitsch thrown out without a moment’s pause when we grow tired them. So I think that the “hunger” has all but disappeared in the West and we look at the people in Iraq voting in spite of the danger. Walks would be a real problem with my condition so it wouldn’t be fair. Also here in the heart of Tokyo, the space between houses is a mere 50 cm not feet. You can hear what your next door neighbour is doing when the windows are open. My next door neighbour sings opera in her spare time, her little dog barks at engine noises, sometimes it’s hard to sleep. One day if we move away from Japan, we might have dogs and of course cats again. I know that my hair must be sticking up by the stares from people walking by as I feed my refugees in the garage or the look in Coco’s (my oldest) eyes as she stretches her front paw to play with an errant cluster of hair, her tiny head cocked on one side. I can’t remember the last time I wore make- up. When I go to the hospital I wear a huge, white cold mask.
